Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost said 2B Johnny Giavotella will play second base against left-handed pitchers, with 2B Chris Getz in the other side of the platoon. The situation will likely change when INF Yuniesky Betancourt (ankle) returns from the disabled list next week.

The Kansas City Royals placed SP Jonathan Sanchez (biceps) on the disabled list with biceps tendonitis Wednesday, May 9, and recalled 2B Johnny Giavotella in a corresponding move.

Kansas City Royals 2B Johnny Giavotella is expected to be recalled from the minors and will likely join the lineup Wednesday, May 9. "He's another right-handed bat," general manager Dayton Moore said, "and we need another right-handed bat over the next several days with all of the left-handed pitchers we're expecting to face." The Royals may decide to place SP Jonathan Sanchez (biceps) on the disabled list because he's dealing with biceps tendonitis, which the team thinks might be the reason for his drop in velocity and effectiveness. If that happens, Ps Luis Mendoza, Nathan Adcock or Vin Mazzaro could be candidates for the rotation. Giavotella is a right-handed option, so he won't necessarily become the starter at second base. He was hitting .331 with five home runs and 25 RBIs in 31 games for Triple-A Omaha.

The Kansas City Royals have optioned 2B Johnny Giavotella to Triple-A Omaha, meaning that the parent club will use a platoon of Yuniesky Betancourt and Chris Getz at second base. "(Giavotella) needs to continue to focus on his defense," manager Ned Yost said. "Johnny is a much better defender today than he was at this time last year, but we had two better defensive options in Betancourt and Getz." Betancourt will also serve as the team's primary backup option at shortstop and third base.

Giavotella's demotion means that OF Lorenzo Cain could become the No. 2 hitter in the batting order, because placing Getz in that role would give the Royals three consecutive left-handed hitters at the top of their lineup, between OF Alex Gordon and 1B Eric Hosmer.

Kansas City Royals SS Yuniesky Betancourt played second base in the team's Cactus League game Saturday, March 17. "I wanted to see Yuni at second," manager Ned Yost said. 2B Chris Getz and Johnny Giavotella were thought to be fighting for the starting 2B job, but Betancourt is now in the mix as well.

Kansas City Royals 2B Johnny Giavotella is the favorite to win the starting second base job over 2B Chris Getz this spring. Getz is the better defensive player, but his lack of pop has him behind in the competition. However, Getz is showing an ability to drive the ball early in spring training. SS Yuniesky Betancourt will fill the utility infield role. The loser of the battle at second base figures to start the year at Triple-A Omaha.

The Kansas City Royals signed SS Alcides Escobar and 2B Johnny Giavotella to one-year deals for the 2012 season Friday, Feb. 24. Escobar will make $519,500 and Giavotella will earn $483,600.

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost said OF Alex Gordon will lead off this year, likely followed by 2B Johnny Giavotella, 1B Eric Hosmer and DH Billy Butler. 3B Mike Moustakas and OF Jeff Francoeur are expected to hit fifth and sixth respectively. Moustakas could drop to sixth against left-handers. C Salvador Perez, OF Lorenzo Cain and SS Alcides Escobar round out the order.

Yost also indicated that Gordon and Butler will see some time at first base to spell Hosmer. "Billy deserves it," Yost said. "He's worked his (backside) off. He's put himself in that position. Now, I'm not thinking of playing him there four days a week, but he'll play there some."
