Tue, 05 Mar 2013 13:44:27 -0800 The Kansas City Royals are expected to take the decision on the starting second base spot between 2Bs Chris Getz and Johnny Giavotella down to the wire this spring, and the loser of the competition is expected to be sent to Triple-A Omaha. Giavotella needs to prove he can hit at the major league level in order to win a job now that his defense has improved. Getz is the better defensive player, and he's been working with hitting coaches Jack Maloof and Andrew David on a new batting stance. Getz's goal is to add significant pop at the plate. "Probably from an average eye," Getz said, "it is kind of a drastic change. Really, I'm just getting into a hitting position quicker than what I was doing before."

Yost said Getz is healthy and has added some bulk in the offseason. Giavotella had a slash line of .250/.276/.330 with a home run and nine RBIs in 32 games after Getz broke his thumb in August. Giavotella's weak spot has been his defensive play.
