Dodgers | Tim Federowicz called up

Wed, 08 May 2013 15:33:44 -0700

The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled C Tim Federowicz from the minors Wednesday, May 8, and optioned SS Justin Sellers in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Ramon Hernandez hasn't been contributing at all with his bat, so expect Federowicz to be the primary offensive backup to A.J. Ellis. Sellers being optioned confirms that the Dodgers will run with Dee Gordon as their primary shortstop with Hanley Ramirez (hamstring) out. There's a decent chance Gordon will stay at short when Ramirez returns, too.

Dodgers | Hanley Ramirez to be out for a while

Mon, 06 May 2013 11:36:30 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly didn't sound optimistic about the chances of SS Hanley Ramirez (hamstring) returning from the disabled list when he's eligible. "A while ... I hope that puts it in the right category," Mattingly said. "You never really know when a guy's ready or not because you can't ever get to the intensity that you need to get to on the hamstring where you're going to explode and ask for more of your body. It's going to be a while." Ramirez, on the other hand, is hoping for a quick recovery.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon started at shortstop both Saturday and Sunday in Ramirez's absence. Justin Sellers is still on roster, and he may get the occasional start at shortstop, but Gordon should now be owned in all leagues because of his speed and the fact that Ramirez could be out for quite a while. Also, the Dodgers are considering moving Ramirez to third base whenever he does return.

Dodgers | Dee Gordon could win SS job

Sat, 04 May 2013 17:58:05 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly did not rule out the possibility of SS Dee Gordon keeping the shortstop job and moving SS Hanley Ramirez (hamstring) to third base when he returns.

Dodgers | Hanley Ramirez to be placed on disabled list

Sat, 04 May 2013 09:47:24 -0700

The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to place SS Hanley Ramirez (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list because of a left hamstring injury sustained while running the bases Friday, May 3. In a corresponding move, SS Dee Gordon will be called up from Triple-A Albuquerque.

Fantasy Tip: It is uncertain at this time if Gordon or INF Justin Sellers will get the bulk of the playing time at shortstop, but Gordon appears to be the better bet and is the more attractive fantasy pickup for his speed. In 25 games for Albuquerque this year, Gordon hit .314 with 12 RBIs and 14 steals. Sellers might remain a factor for NL-only leaguers.

Dodgers | Consider moving Dee Gordon to 2B

Thu, 02 May 2013 17:11:48 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SS Dee Gordon has been fielding ground balls at second base before his games with Triple-A Albuquerque. It is believed the Dodgers are considering moving Gordon to second base long term. Gordon struggled at shortstop when he was with the team last season and has committed seven errors so far this season with Albuquerque.

Dodgers | Justin Sellers could see playing time early

Mon, 01 Apr 2013 18:54:20 -0700

The Los Angeles Dodgers are sold on SS Justin Sellers because of his defense, and he could see plenty of playing time early in the season, according to manager Don Mattingly. "Obviously, we'll see where it goes," Mattingly said. "With the pitching staff we've put together, we want to make sure we catch it as much as we can." The Dodgers like Sellers at shortstop more than SS Dee Gordon. "We want to be able to catch it," Mattingly said. "And we're willing to sacrifice offense to do it."

Fantasy Tip: Sellers is only worth starting if you are extremely desperate to fill a middle infield spot in the deepest of NL leagues. It looks as though Gordon will remain in the minors, so if you picked him up in hopes the Dodgers would go with him at short, it's probably safe to cut him at this point.

Dodgers | Two sent down

Tue, 26 Mar 2013 14:40:38 -0700

The Los Angeles Dodgers optioned SS Dee Gordon to Triple-A Albuquerque and OF Yasiel Puig to Double-A Chattanooga Tuesday, March 26.

Fantasy Tip: Puig was expected to begin in the minors this year, but he might be in consideration for a full-time job in the outfield next season. Gordon's demotion means Luis Cruz will open at shortstop. Some combination of Juan Uribe, Jerry Hairston Jr. and Nick Punto will rotate at third base. Uribe is expected to get the most PT, so he is worth a desperation addition in NL-only leagues.

Dodgers | Don Mattingly not happy with options

Thu, 21 Mar 2013 16:21:56 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly isn't happy with the options he has on the left side of the infield after the injury to SS Hanley Ramirez (thumb). "To be honest with you, I'm not comfortable with anything that's going on at short right now," Mattingly said. The top options to replace Ramirez at shortstop are 3B Luis Cruz and SS Dee Gordon. Mattingly is also unsure if Ramirez will return to shortstop when he's healthy. General manager Ned Colletti is more certain, saying he was confident Ramirez will return to shortstop in May.

Fantasy Tip: Mattingly's unhappiness with his plethora of options can only mean one thing: He'll give the spots to whoever is playing the best, which clouds the fantasy picture. Cruz should have a job regardless, and Gordon presents the most upside with his speed. The other options don't generate much excitement.

Dodgers | Justin Sellers being considered

Thu, 21 Mar 2013 11:09:43 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SS Justin Sellers will be considered to fill in for SS Hanley Ramirez (thumb), even though Sellers was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque Tuesday, March 19. SS Dee Gordon (ankle) is dealing with a mild left ankle sprain. Sellers is considered a better pure defender than Gordon, but he was hitting only .150 this spring. INFs Luis Cruz, Nick Punto, Juan Uribe and Jerry Hairston Jr. are all options, as well. SS Miguel Rojas is in minor league camp and has been compared defensively to former SS Omar Vizquel.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear what direction the Dodgers will go at shortstop, but Cruz and Gordon make the most sense. The bottom line is none of these options have significant fantasy value, and Los Angeles will likely stick with whoever is playing the best.

Dodgers | Dee Gordon has sprained ankle

Tue, 19 Mar 2013 12:48:54 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SS Dee Gordon (ankle) is day-to-day with a sprained left ankle.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon will start the year in the minors with Hanley Ramirez moving back to shortstop and Luis Cruz manning the hot corner. His speed won't slump, but his weak hitting skills make it tough for him to lock down a spot. He could be a nice late-season source of thefts, though, if he makes it up and finds consistent PT.
