Rays | Alex Colome will start Friday

Wed, 25 Jun 2014 08:51:45 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Colome will be called up from Triple-A Durham to start the first doubleheader game Friday, June 27, against the Baltimore Orioles. SP Jake Odorizzi will start the second contest.

Fantasy Tip: The intriguing but erratic Colome would be used as a spot-starter for appropriate deep-mixed situations. He may be an option to take a rotation spot should the Rays do any cleaning of house near the trade deadline, so he's worth an AL-only stash.

Rays | Jake Odorizzi scratched

Tue, 15 Apr 2014 13:09:17 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi (illness) will not make his scheduled start Tuesday, April 15. RP Brandon Gomes will start in his place.

Fantasy Tip: His flu-like symptoms apparently were too taxing for him to start on Tax Day. Gomes isn't a recommended fantasy play, especially for the possibility that Joe Maddon mixes and matches to fill innings tonight.

Mon, 14 Apr 2014 13:38:27 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi (illness) was sent home sick Monday, April 14.

Fantasy Tip: This could be bad news for Odorizzi's start this week if he's not at 100 percent. It may not be a bad time to bench him for this one, depending on how he bounces back.

Rays | Jake Odorizzi wins spot

Sat, 22 Mar 2014 14:10:10 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi won the fifth starter spot in the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Odorizzi has really good stuff and is a good chip to own in AL-only leagues. However, he may not stick around long if Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) returns in the near future. He's worth a flier in mixed leagues, but understand he has to be lights out to keep a spot, barring another injury.

Rays | Erik Bedard likely to opt out if not on roster

Wed, 19 Mar 2014 11:10:55 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Erik Bedard said he will opt out of his contract and become a free agent if the doesn't break camp with the club. He has gone 2-1 with a 7.15 ERA in 11 1/3 innings this spring, and opponents are hitting .347 against him. Bedard is competing with SPs Cesar Ramos and Jake Odorizzi for the No. 5 starting spot. Manager Joe Maddon expects to make a decision on the fifth starter gig Saturday, March 22.

Rays | Jeremy Hellickson throws

Wed, 12 Mar 2014 08:12:06 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) made 25 throws at 45 to 60 feet Wednesday, March 12. He said he felt good and was encouraged by the results.

Fantasy Tip: Hell Boy probably won't surface in regulation game action until May, as Jake Odorizzi, Cesar Ramos and Erik Bedard battle it out to take his spot. Hellickson's recent performances, however, say he's not a lock to jump immediately back into the rotation.
