SPs Andrew Cashner (thumb), Joe Wieland (elbow) and Cory Luebke (elbow) aren't options because they are rehabbing from injuries. Cashner is expected to be back on a mound by March 1 and Wieland and Luebke won't return until midseason or later after having Tommy John surgery.

The Padres have decided to shut down Kelly, and SP Anthony Bass will start Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Miller Park in Milwaukee. Padres manager Bud Black said it was also unlikely that Kelly would pitch in the Arizona Fall League as previously scheduled. "He hasn't bounced back after his last couple starts," said Black. "His arm is just a little sore. He wanted to make his last start. I took the ball." |
