The San Diego Padres placed Ps Casey Kelly (elbow) and Cory Luebke (elbow) on the 60-day disabled list Sunday, March 31. Kelly has ligament tears in his right elbow, while Luebke is recovering from Tommy John surgery done in May 2012.

San Diego Padres SP Casey Kelly (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in the first week of April, and he'll miss 12 to 18 months.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly's injury opens up another spot in the starting rotation. Eric Stults is in line for the No. 4 spot and Tyson Ross may have the leg up on the final spot over Anthony Bass and Andrew Cashner (thumb).

San Diego Padres SP Casey Kelly (elbow) will receive a second opinion on his sore right elbow, but the team fears he may be headed for Tommy John surgery. Kelly is expected to make a final decision in a few days after he goes over all his options.

San Diego Padres SP Casey Kelly said he watched video of his starts from last season over the winter, and he came away wanting to work on his pitch selection and his work out of the stretch. The team wants to see him improve his secondary pitches as he competes for a rotation spot this spring.

The San Diego Padres have several open starting rotation spots after SPs Clayton Richard, Edinson Volquez and Jason Marquis. Ps Anthony Bass, Casey Kelly, Tyson Ross, Eric Stults, Freddy Garcia and Robbie Erlin are all in the picture. SP Tim Stauffer (elbow) is about two weeks behind the other pitchers. SPs Andrew Cashner (thumb), Joe Wieland (elbow) and Cory Luebke (elbow) aren't options because they are rehabbing from injuries. Cashner is expected to be back on a mound by March 1 and Wieland and Luebke won't return until midseason or later after having Tommy John surgery.

Padres | Casey Kelly scratched from final start

San Diego Padres SP Casey Kelly will not start for the rest of the season. The Padres have decided to shut down Kelly, and SP Anthony Bass will start Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Miller Park in Milwaukee. Padres manager Bud Black said it was also unlikely that Kelly would pitch in the Arizona Fall League as previously scheduled. "He hasn't bounced back after his last couple starts," said Black. "His arm is just a little sore. He wanted to make his last start. I took the ball."
