Pirates | Gerrit Cole gets knocked around

Wed, 07 Oct 2015 22:30:18 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole allowed four earned runs, six hits and a walk with four strikeouts over five innings in a loss in the National League Wild Card Game against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Fantasy Tip: Cole had a tremendous season, but it certainly ended with a whimper against the divisional rivals. He was 2-1 with a 2.13 ERA in three regular season outings against the Cubs with no homers allowed, but that wasn't the case Wednesday.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole wins 19th game

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 18:38:58 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (19-8) allowed two runs on seven hits over seven innings in a victory over the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday, Sept. 30, in the first game of a doubleheader. He walked none and struck out two.

Fantasy Tip: Cole ($9,400, 18.8% of cap) has thrown seven innings in four of his last five outings. He won't pitch again during the regular season but makes a solid postseason playoff option in FantasyScore.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole earns 18th win

Fri, 25 Sep 2015 18:22:40 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (18-8) allowed one run on four hits over seven innings in a victory over the Chicago Cubs Friday, Sept. 25, with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Cole's ($9,400, 18.8% of cap) 18 victories are the most for any Pittsburgh starter since John Smiley won 20 games in 1991. His final start of the regular season is scheduled to come against the Cincinnati Reds Friday, Oct. 2, and he makes one of FantasyScore's best starting pitching options.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole to be skipped

Mon, 07 Sep 2015 18:30:13 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole will be skipped in his next turn in the rotation, and he will take his next turn in one of the games of the doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs Tuesday, Sept. 15, according to manager Clint Hurdle.

Fantasy Tip: Cole ($9,400, 18.8% of cap) is not dealing with an injury, but they are trying to limit his wear and tear and preserve him for the playoffs. FantasyScore players obviously want to avoid him in the upcoming week.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole's struggles continue

Thu, 13 Aug 2015 05:00:59 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole has lost three straight starts on the road after winning the previous three, and he is 0-2 with a 3.80 ERA against the St. Louis Cardinals in four starts this season.

Fantasy Tip: Cole ($9,600, 19.2% of cap) is still a strong play in FantasyScore. He is working through a slump, and his struggles against the Cardinals are dragging down his month of August. He should snap out of his funk now that St. Louis is in the rear-view mirror for the time being.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole succeeding with his slider

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 12:08:54 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole is throwing his slider a career-high 21.7% of the time this season, and opponents are batting just .138 against the pitch.

Fantasy Tip: Cole ($9,600, 19.2% of cap) is having a breakout season with 14 wins, a 2.29 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP and a 9.0 K/9. He faces the Los Angeles Dodgers Friday Aug. 7, and Clayton Kershaw ($9,900, 19.8% of cap) is starting opposite Cole. It might not be the best night to utilize the Pittsburgh ace at FantasyScore.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole suffers the loss vs. Royals

Tue, 21 Jul 2015 20:39:58 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole allowed three runs -- two earned -- on five hits while striking out six batters through 7 1/3 innings during the Pirates' 3-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals Tuesday, July 21. It was just the fourth loss of the season for Cole.

Fantasy Tip: Cole ($9,600, 19.2% of cap) threw six scoreless frames before the Royals finally got to him, and he likely can be classified as a tough-luck loser due to the lack of run support his offense provided. Cole has emerged as an ace-caliber fantasy arm, and he can be started with confidence in FantasyScore contests in the majority of matchups.
