Pirates | Gerrit Cole not coming up

Tue, 07 May 2013 15:33:38 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said SP Gerrit Cole will not be brought up from the minors to start Sunday, May 12, in place of SP James McDonald (shoulder).

Fantasy Tip: Cole is the team's top pitching prospect and should already be on the radar of all keeper league players. the Pirates don't want to rush him or Jameson Taillon this year, though, so we may not see one or either until later this season.

Pirates | Veteran C helps Gerrit Cole

Sun, 10 Mar 2013 21:14:49 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole ran into trouble in the third inning of his Grapefruit League start Sunday, March 10. That's when C Russell Martin (shoulder) came out to talk things over with the youngster. "My hunch was that he was thinking about the runner and over-emphasizing the runner," Martin said. "It's something that we've preached about, but you don't want it to affect your delivery and you don't want it to affect the quality of your pitches."

Fantasy Tip: Martin is mostly a No. 2 fantasy option in mixed formats, and a low-end option in NL-only leagues, but his veteran leadership will be far more valuable for a young pitching staff for instances just like this one. Martin was playing in his first game since Feb. 24 after dealing with a shoulder issue.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole works with starting rotation

Tue, 19 Feb 2013 00:05:01 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole is working with members of the team's starting rotation, but Cole has not been promised a spot in the rotation much less a role with the team. "We look at guys we may want to match up, so they can watch some other people, see how they go about things, to help with that educational process. That's something we definitely keep in mind with some of our prospects."

Pirates | Top two arms will be on display

Wed, 30 Jan 2013 19:26:51 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SPs Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon will be in major league camp during spring training, but the team has vowed to not rush the pitching prospects, even if they get off to a strong start in camp.

Fantasy Tip: Cole and Taillon are two of the brightest pitching prospects in the game, but right now their fantasy appeal is strictly limited to long-term keeper formats. An appearance in the majors in 2013 wouldn't be out of the question, but they aren't worth a roster spot in re-draft leagues just yet.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole to start in minors

Fri, 14 Dec 2012 16:18:01 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole will open the 2013 season with Triple-A Indianapolis. "Our plan for Gerrit is to have him come to spring training and show us how strong his offseason was and then continue his growth and development," general manager Neal Huntington said. "When he shows us he's ready to maintain his delivery and unleash his four-pitch package with consistency, we'll bring him to the major leagues." SPs Kyle McPherson and Jeff Locke are candidates to earn a job in the starting rotation.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole unlikely to debut this year

Mon, 13 Aug 2012 16:34:37 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole is unlikely to be called up in September. "We've not talked about it internally, (but) my gut (feeling) is no," general manager Neal Huntington said. "We have a lot of other options instead of rushing a young prospect." Cole is 3-4 with a 3.43 ERA in nine starts with Double-A Altoona this year.
