Wed, 15 May 2013 14:58:02 -0700 San Diego Padres SP Andrew Cashner needed only 77 pitches to get through seven innings against the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday, May 14, and he's not trying to throw as hard so that he can last deeper into games. It was his second straight start that he has gotten 22 outs. Cashner is averaging 95 mph on his fastball this year, which is down from 98 mph from last year. He's also using his two-seamer and knuckle-slider more often, which creates more of a speed difference with his changeup. Cashner's changeup is also a bit slower this year, down to 85.7 mph from 87.4 mph last season. Cashner has given up an earned run and nine hits while walking four in 14 2/3 innings in his last two starts. However, his strikeouts per nine innings are down from 10.10 last year to 6.39 this year. Fantasy Tip: A planned dip in velocity is bound to mean less strikeouts for Cashner. His permanent move to the rotation was expected to have this result eventually, though. The good news is that this transition should allow Cashner to pitch deeper into games and become more efficient. The fact that he pitches at PETCO Park makes him even more intriguing in mixed formats. It may be time to hop on.
Tue, 23 Apr 2013 15:24:29 -0700 San Diego Padres SP Andrew Cashner will make the start against the San Francisco Giants Friday, April 26, and manager Bud Black foresees Cashner staying in the rotation for the long term, based on his performance. Cashner is expected to throw 80-90 pitches Friday. Fantasy Tip: Cashner is essentially taking Tyson Ross' (shoulder) rotation spot, but the important part is that Black and the coaching staff are completely open to keeping Cashner, one of their better strikeout-inducing pitchers, in the rotation. Jason Marquis or Eric Stults may lose their rotation spots when Ross returns, or Ross could be sent to a long-relief role. The bottom line here, though, is that Cashner should now be owned in all formats now that he has a rotation spot once again.
Sat, 20 Apr 2013 14:47:57 -0700 San Diego Padres SP Clayton Richard (illness) will not make his scheduled start Saturday, April 20, because of flu-like symptoms. SP Andrew Cashner will start in his place.
Tue, 02 Apr 2013 16:59:29 -0700 San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross won the No. 5 starter battle because he had a sound spring and the Padres want to ease Andrew Cashner into action via the bullpen. Early in camp, Ross worked with pitching coach Darren Balsley to change his stride during his delivery to help his pitches stay lower in the strike zone. At one point, Ross had a run of 15 1/3 scoreless innings in spring ball. The Padres probably will cap Cashner's innings this year at somewhere between 150 and 160. Fantasy Tip: Ross has long boasted potential for more strikeouts and better consistency, so this looks like a sound opportunity for him to step into deep-league relevance, even if only for a short stretch. Expect Cashner, whose thumb looks to have healed, to be the first man up if a rotation spot clears. In deep mixed leagues, he's still worth monitoring or stashing; he should still provide plenty of K's as a reliever.
Wed, 27 Mar 2013 15:54:54 -0700 San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross is the favorite to win the No. 5 starting spot over SP Andrew Cashner, but it appears that Cashner will make the team as well.
Wed, 27 Mar 2013 14:21:16 -0700 San Diego Padres SPs Edinson Volquez, Clayton Richard, Eric Stults and Jason Marquis make up the first four spots in the starting rotation, and SPs Tyson Ross and Andrew Cashner (thumb) are believed to be battling it out for the final spot. The team won't need a fifth starter until April 6. Fantasy Tip: Both Ross and Cashner could be quite productive in SD's five-man rotation. The team may decide to be cautious with Cashner as he comes off an unfortunate hunting accident, but they'd prefer not to send him to the bullpen because he has major upside as a starter. Cashner has much more upside as a high-strikeout pitching commodity and should be owned in more leagues than Ross.
Tue, 26 Mar 2013 21:28:49 -0700 San Diego Padres SP Andrew Cashner (thumb) allowed one run, three hits and two walks over four-plus innings in a Cactus League spring start Tuesday, March 26. He threw 72 pitches with his velocity ranging from 94-97 miles per hour. "We like the fact he is healthy. The thumb is not an issue. He is throwing the ball well. He could be in the rotation or the pen, but the long-term plan is as a starter," manager Bud Black said. "The velocity was good today, the changeup was good." Fantasy Tip: Cashner is worth a roster spot in NL-only fantasy leagues for his potential, but wait to see what role he is used to start the season. As a long reliever, he is only worth a look in deeper NL-only rotisserie formats for help in the ERA and WHIP categories. As a starter, his value is obviously much more.
Wed, 20 Mar 2013 14:04:36 -0700 San Diego Padres SP Andrew Cashner (thumb) got up to 50-60 pitches Wednesday, March 20, meaning he could make it to around 90 pitches by the time the team's fifth turn in the rotation comes up in the regular season. Fantasy Tip: Cashner has enticing swing-and-miss stuff and is ahead of schedule in his recovery. He's definitely worth a late-round selection in case he makes the opening day rotation. Even if he doesn't, he should be recovered by late April.
Thu, 07 Mar 2013 15:09:28 -0800 San Diego Padres SP Andrew Cashner (thumb) threw live batting practice Thursday, March 7, and looked great. He is close to pitching in a spring game.
Sat, 02 Mar 2013 09:52:55 -0800 San Diego Padres SP Andrew Cashner (thumb) threw his second bullpen session Friday, March 1, and is expected to throw another session Sunday, March 3, or Monday, March 4.
