Baltimore Orioles 2B Jonathan Schoop is 9-for-17 with four extra-base hits and five RBIs in Grapefruit League play. He's still in competition with Ryan Flaherty and Jemile Weeks to start at second base. All three have minor league options.
Fantasy Tip: Schoop has the best long-term potential of these three but will have to keep up his hot hitting to usurp the other two. Either way, Schoop should emerge with semi-regular playing time at some point this season, which means he's worth tucking away in AL-onlys.

The Baltimore Orioles are expected to stay in-house to fill their vacancies at second base and closer, unless RP Fernando Rodney (Rays) lowers his asking price. RP Tommy Hunter appears to be the favorite to close games at the moment, with INF Ryan Flaherty expected to have the upper hand over INF Jemile Weeks for the second base job.

The Baltimore Orioles are interested in re-signing 2B Brian Roberts to a one-year deal. If they don't, they think 2B Ryan Flaherty is ready for a bigger role. "The way they do the metrics they profile him out as hitting 20 home runs at second base and playing pretty good defense. That's a pretty good combo. We have Jemile (Weeks), we have the potential of (prospect) Jonathan Schoop. First and foremost, we have the potential of Brian Roberts. So, I like our options," manager Buck Showalter said.

The Baltimore Orioles acquired 2B Jemile Weeks from the Oakland Athletics Monday, Dec. 2, for RP Jim Johnson, according to a source.
Fantasy Tip: The fact that the O's traded their closer for Weeks speaks volumes about how they view him. Jonathan Schoop and Ryan Flaherty are his main competitors at the keystone, and Weeks, although a disappointment to this point in his career, still has major league talent. Don't forget about him come draft day as a late-round flier in deeper leagues.

The Oakland Athletics acquired RP Jim Johnson from the Baltimore Orioles Monday, Dec. 2, for 2B Jemile Weeks, according to a source.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson has posted 101 saves over the past two years, but he also blew nine saves in 2013. He is a top-notch fantasy closer, and he'll be pitching for another contender, so he'll be a Top 10 fantasy option again in 2014.

Two scouts said the Oakland Athletics are willing to trade 2B Jemile Weeks, who has spent the entire season with Triple-A Sacramento, but their asking price is high. Weeks has seen a lot of action as the designated hitter, with 2B Grant Green receiving the bulk of the playing time for Sacramento at second base.

Oakland Athletics 2B Jemile Weeks is learning to play shortstop to improve his chances of another recall from Triple-A Sacramento. Manager Bob Melvin said it was Weeks' idea. "I talked to Sacramento manager Steve Scarsone, and he said he's very playable there," Melvin said. "He wanted to do it, based on the needs at the time. Like anybody, if you can play different positions, that gives you more chances to get here, whether it's at second or shortstop or in a utility role."

Oakland Athletics 2B Jemile Weeks worked at shortstop with Triple-A Sacramento Wednesday, April 10, and started there for the first time in his career. The team recalled INF Andy Parrino over him because Parrino can play shortstop, second base, third and the outfield. "I wouldn't be surprised if that was Jemile's idea," manager Bob Melvin said. "It just opens up some versatility options for him."
