The Baltimore Orioles acquired 2B Jemile Weeks from the Oakland Athletics Monday, Dec. 2, for RP Jim Johnson, according to a source.
Fantasy Tip: The fact that the O's traded their closer for Weeks speaks volumes about how they view him. Jonathan Schoop and Ryan Flaherty are his main competitors at the keystone, and Weeks, although a disappointment to this point in his career, still has major league talent. Don't forget about him come draft day as a late-round flier in deeper leagues.

The Oakland Athletics acquired RP Jim Johnson from the Baltimore Orioles Monday, Dec. 2, for 2B Jemile Weeks, according to a source.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson has posted 101 saves over the past two years, but he also blew nine saves in 2013. He is a top-notch fantasy closer, and he'll be pitching for another contender, so he'll be a Top 10 fantasy option again in 2014.

Two scouts said the Oakland Athletics are willing to trade 2B Jemile Weeks, who has spent the entire season with Triple-A Sacramento, but their asking price is high. Weeks has seen a lot of action as the designated hitter, with 2B Grant Green receiving the bulk of the playing time for Sacramento at second base.

Oakland Athletics 2B Jemile Weeks is learning to play shortstop to improve his chances of another recall from Triple-A Sacramento. Manager Bob Melvin said it was Weeks' idea. "I talked to Sacramento manager Steve Scarsone, and he said he's very playable there," Melvin said. "He wanted to do it, based on the needs at the time. Like anybody, if you can play different positions, that gives you more chances to get here, whether it's at second or shortstop or in a utility role."

Oakland Athletics 2B Jemile Weeks worked at shortstop with Triple-A Sacramento Wednesday, April 10, and started there for the first time in his career. The team recalled INF Andy Parrino over him because Parrino can play shortstop, second base, third and the outfield. "I wouldn't be surprised if that was Jemile's idea," manager Bob Melvin said. "It just opens up some versatility options for him."

Oakland Athletics 2B Eric Sogard will see the bulk of playing time at second base with 2B Scott Sizemore (knee) out for the year. INF Andy Parrino was called up over 2B Jemile Weeks because of his versatility. SS Hiroyuki Nakajima could work out at second base with Triple-A Sacramento now, too, and it might be a better fit for him at the big league level than shortstop, Susan Slusser speculates. Weeks and 2B Grant Green could also be used at the keystone at some point this year.
Fantasy Tip: Right now, Sogard is the only player worth owning at this spot, but only in AL-only formats. Weeks may be the best speculative add in those same leagues if he can prove to the club that he deserves another shot. This very well could be a revolving door, though, so don't invest a ton.

Oakland Athletics 2B Scott Sizemore (knee) remains in the mix for the starting second base job after 2B Jemile Weeks was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento Sunday, March 24, but the hot-hitting 3B Eric Sogard and SS Adam Rosales are also in the competition.

The Oakland Athletics optioned 2B Jemile Weeks to Triple-A Sacramento Sunday, March 24. "There are times you just have to make tough cuts, and that was a tough cut," manager Bob Melvin said.
Fantasy Tip: Weeks is no longer worth a roster spot in any fantasy leagues. Adam Rosales, Scott Sizemore and Eric Sogard are fighting it out for the starting 2B job, and the winner would be a decent AL-only addition.
