Athletics | Jemile Weeks works at SS

Thu, 11 Apr 2013 11:53:22 -0700

Oakland Athletics 2B Jemile Weeks worked at shortstop with Triple-A Sacramento Wednesday, April 10, and started there for the first time in his career. The team recalled INF Andy Parrino over him because Parrino can play shortstop, second base, third and the outfield. "I wouldn't be surprised if that was Jemile's idea," manager Bob Melvin said. "It just opens up some versatility options for him."

Athletics | Options aplenty at 2B

Thu, 11 Apr 2013 11:49:05 -0700

Oakland Athletics 2B Eric Sogard will see the bulk of playing time at second base with 2B Scott Sizemore (knee) out for the year. INF Andy Parrino was called up over 2B Jemile Weeks because of his versatility. SS Hiroyuki Nakajima could work out at second base with Triple-A Sacramento now, too, and it might be a better fit for him at the big league level than shortstop, Susan Slusser speculates. Weeks and 2B Grant Green could also be used at the keystone at some point this year.

Fantasy Tip: Right now, Sogard is the only player worth owning at this spot, but only in AL-only formats. Weeks may be the best speculative add in those same leagues if he can prove to the club that he deserves another shot. This very well could be a revolving door, though, so don't invest a ton.

Athletics | Scott Sizemore to start at 2B?

Sun, 24 Mar 2013 19:08:02 -0700

Oakland Athletics 2B Scott Sizemore (knee) remains in the mix for the starting second base job after 2B Jemile Weeks was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento Sunday, March 24, but the hot-hitting 3B Eric Sogard and SS Adam Rosales are also in the competition.

Athletics | Jemile Weeks optioned out

Sun, 24 Mar 2013 19:04:53 -0700

The Oakland Athletics optioned 2B Jemile Weeks to Triple-A Sacramento Sunday, March 24. "There are times you just have to make tough cuts, and that was a tough cut," manager Bob Melvin said.

Fantasy Tip: Weeks is no longer worth a roster spot in any fantasy leagues. Adam Rosales, Scott Sizemore and Eric Sogard are fighting it out for the starting 2B job, and the winner would be a decent AL-only addition.

Athletics | Plenty of middle infield questions

Thu, 14 Mar 2013 14:16:01 -0700

Oakland Athletics 2Bs Jemile Weeks (shoulder) and Scott Sizemore have underwhelmed this spring, and Weeks lost two weeks to a shoulder injury. Weeks should be returning Friday, March 15, and Sizemore has just three hits in 21 at-bats. SS Jed Lowrie, as a result, could open the season as the starting second baseman. Lowrie is hitting .375 with two home runs and nine RBIs. However, the team isn't exactly sold on SS Hiroyuki Nakajima at shortstop. "Certainly Jed Lowrie is a guy that we're going to have to find a spot for him somewhere the way he's playing now," manager Bob Melvin said. "He's certainly making a case for himself to be in there somewhere. Whether that's every day at a position or moving around, which you've seen him do here in spring, that's still open for debate, too." Weeks or Sizemore are likely to be sent to the minors to start the season.

Athletics | Scott Sizemore returns, Jemile Weeks soon

Thu, 07 Mar 2013 15:03:47 -0800

Oakland Athletics 3B Scott Sizemore (hand) returned to the lineup Thursday, March 7, after being bothered by a bruised hand. 2B Jemile Weeks (shoulder) should return soon from his bruised right shoulder. Hitting right-handed and throwing have given Weeks the most trouble due to his shoulder pain. Along with these two, SS Jed Lowrie is also in the competition for the second base job.

Sun, 27 Jan 2013 21:51:50 -0800

Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin said second base will be an "open competition" in the spring training between 3B Scott Sizemore and 2B Jemile Weeks. Sizemore will also get reps at third base during camp.
