Astros | Jason Castro not in lineup

Thu, 05 May 2016 14:31:40 -0700

Houston Astros C Jason Castro (rest) is not in the batting order Thursday, May 5. C Erik Kratz will start in his place and bat eighth opposite Seattle Mariners SP Wade Miley.

Fantasy Tip: With a lefty on the mound, Castro gets the night off, which is unfortunate for him, as his bat is finally coming to life, having at least one hit in six straight contests to get his average up above the Mendoza Line. Kratz, on the other hand, never has a live bat, hence why he's hitting 1-for-19 (.053) thus far this season. He can be left on every waiver wire imaginable.

Astros | Jason Castro on the upswing

Wed, 04 May 2016 23:55:26 -0700

Houston Astros C Jason Castro went 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two walks, three runs scored and four RBIs Wednesday, May 4, against the Minnesota Twins. He tied a career high with the four RBIs. Over the past seven games he is hitting .444 with eight hits, two homers and five RBIs to raise his average from .114 to .210. "I made a change about a week ago or so and just tried to simplify things and not try to overdo it," Castro said. "So it's been nice to kind of see the results pretty much right away when I made the adjustment."

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners likely gave up on Castro after his super slow start and haven't reaped the rewards of his adjustment. He has re-emerged as a No. 2 receiver in AL-only fantasy leagues and DFS play.

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 11:02:44 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena and C Jason Castro are back in the starting lineup against Oakland Athletics SP Jesse Hahn Saturday, April 30, batting eighth and ninth, respectively.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena is batting .193 with four RBI through 66 at-bats, while Castro is hitting just .128 with two RBI in 47 at-bats. Neither player should be viewed as a viable fantasy option.

Astros | Luis Valbuena, Jason Castro out

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 16:17:10 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena and C Jason Castro are not in the starting lineup against Oakland Athletics SP Sean Manaea Friday, April 29. SS Marwin Gonzalez will start at third base and is batting eighth, while C Erik Kratz will start at catcher and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez has gone 4-for-15 with one home run and one RBI over the last seven days and is not a strong option in most leagues. Kratz is hitting only .069 this season and should be avoided in all leagues.

Astros | Preston Tucker, Jason Castro out

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 15:44:52 -0700

Houston Astros OF Preston Tucker and C Jason Castro are not in the starting lineup Monday, April 25. OF Evan Gattis is serving as the designated hitter and batting sixth, while C Erik Kratz is behind the plate and is hitting ninth against Seattle Mariners SP Taijuan Walker.

Fantasy Tip: Gattis is starting to see more of the starts as the DH over Tucker, which limits Tucker's value to cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues. Gattis is hitting only .212 in the early going and hasn't gone deep yet in 32 at-bats, so he's a risky play against the strong Walker Monday night. Kratz should be ignored everywhere.

Astros | Jason Castro returns to lineup

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 10:36:30 -0700

Houston Astros C Jason Castro is back in the starting lineup against Boston Red Sox Clay Buchholz Saturday, April 23, batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Castro is batting just .132 on the year and has struck out 18 times in 38 at-bats, so he should be avoided in all fantasy formats.

Astros | Jason Castro sitting out vs. Boston

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 15:11:58 -0700

Houston Astros C Jason Castro is not in the starting lineup Friday, April 22. C Erik Kratz is starting behind the plate and batting ninth against Boston Red Sox SP Steven Wright Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Castro has negatively regressed annually since his 2013 breakout and currently sits with a .132/.214/.237 slash line to start 2016. At this point, he is nothing more than a desperation fantasy option. Kratz is 0-for-11 to start this season and cannot be started with confidence in any fantasy format Friday.

Astros | Jason Castro out Tuesday

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 13:39:32 -0700

Houston Astros C Jason Castro is not in the lineup Tuesday, April 12, against the Kansas City Royals. C Erik Kratz is hitting ninth in Castro's place.

Fantasy Tip: This appears to be a normal night off for Castro, but Kratz is hitless and doesn't have fantasy value so look elsewhere for catching help.

Astros | Houston had talks with Jason Castro

Sun, 14 Feb 2016 08:18:15 -0800

The Houston Astros discussed contract extension proposals with C Jason Castro this offseason before salary arbitration numbers were exchanged. According to a person familiar with the offers, a potential two-year deal was discussed, as well as a possible three-year deal with an option year.

Fantasy Tip: Castro is eligible to become a free agent after the 2016 season and will make $5 million this year after losing his arbitration case. He hit just .211 with 11 home runs and 31 RBIs in 104 games last season and is an option for AL-only and two-catcher fantasy baseball leagues.
