Mariners | Matchups cost two starting spots

Tue, 14 May 2013 20:04:58 -0700

Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Tuesday, May 14, that the reason 2B Dustin Ackley and 1B Justin Smoak were out of the lineup against the New York Yankees was simply due to playing matchups. "It's more of a matchup thing than anything," Wedge said. "I wanted to get (OF Raul Ibanez) in there, and I wanted to get (INF Robert Andino) and (SS Brendan Ryan) in there. They both had decent numbers against CC."

Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge has noticed the results of the adjustments that 1B Justin Smoak has made to his swing this spring. "Not only was he driving the ball pull-side, but he was driving the ball the other way too," Wedge said. "His bat head is in the zone longer, he's in a strong position to hit. He's just much more grounded up there than he used to be." Smoak said his left-handed swing is much more compact.

Mariners | Kendrys Morales to hit in middle of order

Wed, 19 Dec 2012 15:05:13 -0800

Seattle Mariners 1B Kendrys Morales will be penciled into the middle of the lineup for the team next season. "We have been focused on adding offense this offseason, and feel that Kendrys will be a middle-of-the-order bat for us," general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "He's a switch-hitter with power who has played - and hit - in the AL West. He's familiar with the teams and parks and is a proven run-producer." Morales will likely compete with 1B Justin Smoak at first base or serve as the team's designated hitter. Cs Jesus Montero and John Jaso could split time at DH, too. SPs Blake Beavan, Erasmo Ramirez, Danny Hultzen, James Paxton, Taijuan Walker and Brendan Maurer will be given a shot in spring training to crack a starting rotation that now includes only SPs Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma.
