Blue Jays | Ezequiel Carrera starting in right field

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 07:59:01 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays OF Ezequiel Carrera is starting in right field and batting seventh against San Diego Padres SP Luis Perdomo Wednesday, July 27. Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak is not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Toronto has a lot of flexibility with the addition of Melvin Upton Jr., which is highlighted in the Wednesday lineup. Carrera and Smoak could be victims of hits to their playing time going forward, as manager John Gibbons could utilize Edwin Encarnacion at first base more frequently, and Carrera is likely the fifth outfielder on the current depth chart. Outside of cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues, Carrera and Smoak are replaceable.

Blue Jays | Justin Smoak not in the lineup

Sun, 24 Jul 2016 09:28:54 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak is not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners SP Wade Miley Sunday, July 24. 1B Edwin Encarnacion will start at first base, while 3B Josh Donaldson will serve as the designated hitter. 2B Darwin Barney will start at third base and is batting first.

Fantasy Tip: Barney is hitting .302 with five RBI this month and has a .282 average with one home run and four RBI against left-handed pitchers. Owners in daily fantasy leagues can considered Barney as a sleeper option for their lineup. Encarnacion and Donaldson should be started in all leagues.

Blue Jays | Michael Saunders, Justin Smoak out

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 10:32:51 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays OF Michael Saunders and 1B Justin Smoak are not in the starting lineup against Arizona Diamondbacks left-handed SP Patrick Corbin Wednesday, July 20. 2B Darwin Barney is starting in left field and is hitting leadoff, which moves 2B Devon Travis down to eighth in the batting order.

Fantasy Tip: Saunders is resting versus a lefty, and Smoak is out for the second straight day with no DH in an NL park. Barney might be an intriguing low-priced flier in DFS as a sleeper, but his offensive profile is limited, and his style of play doesn't work well for daily owners. Travis loses a lot of luster in the daily arena and should be avoided.

Blue Jays | Justin Smoak out in NL park

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 16:40:07 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak is not in the starting lineup in a National League park Tuesday, July 19. 1B Edwin Encarnacion is playing first base and is hitting third against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Godley.

Fantasy Tip: Expect this to be the case again tomorrow, so make sure to avoid Smoak in all fantasy formats the next two days. Encarnacion leads all of baseball with a whopping 81 RBI already to go along with his 24 homers. EE is a must-start in all fantasy leagues tonight against Godley in Arizona.

Blue Jays | Edwin Encarnacion still in team plans

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 04:52:36 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays DH Edwin Encarnacion is still in the team's plans to possibly re-sign in free agency even though it inked 1B Justin Smoak to a two-year contract.

Fantasy Tip: Toronto general manager Ross Atkins said it was Smoak's potential development that triggered the team's desire to extend him. Encarnacion will be high in demand and should be on daily and regular leagues, but will he be elsewhere in 2017?

Blue Jays | Justin Smoak receives extension

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 09:22:34 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak agreed to a two-year extension with the Blue Jays Saturday, July 16, worth $8.25 million. The deal also includes a $6 million option for the 2019 season.

Fantasy Tip: Smoak will continue to be an everyday player for Toronto for the next few years. He is hitting .234 with nine home runs and 23 RBI this season and is a decent option in deeper mixed leagues.

Blue Jays | Edwin Encarnacion, Russell Martin out

Sun, 10 Jul 2016 08:09:00 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays DH/1B Edwin Encarnacion and C Russell Martin are not in the starting lineup against Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez Sunday, July 10. 3B Josh Donaldson is batting second and serving as the designated hitter, while 1B Justin Smoak is playing first base and batting seventh. In addition, OF Michael Saunders will play left field and bat third, while C Josh Thole starts behind the plate and hits ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Saunders is batting .423 over the past seven days with four doubles, a home run and five RBI, making him a must-start option in all fantasy formats. On the other hand, Smoak and Thole haven't fared so well at the plate recently. Smoak is 4-for-24 (.167) during the month of July and is hitless in 12 lifetime at-bats versus Sanchez, while Thole is batting just .120 through 75 at-bats this season. They should be avoided everywhere.

Blue Jays | Justin Smoak out of the lineup

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 07:33:32 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak is not in the starting lineup against Detroit Tigers SP Matt Boyd Saturday, July 9. 1B Edwin Encarnacion will start at first base, while 3B Josh Donaldson will serve as the designated hitter. 2B Darwin Barney will start at third base and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Barney is hitting .385 with two RBI in six games this month and is receiving more playing time. He should be a decent starting candidate in daily fantasy leagues.

Blue Jays | Justin Smoak takes a seat

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 12:31:36 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, July 6. OF Junior Lake draws into the lineup in right field and is batting eighth against Kansas City Royals SP Ian Kennedy.

Fantasy Tip: Lake doesn't move the fantasy needle much and is a desperation lottery ticket as a deep sleeper in daily games tonight. He has only three hits (one home run) in 14 at-bats for Toronto this season.

Blue Jays | Justin Smoak sitting against Royals

Mon, 04 Jul 2016 13:18:58 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak is not in the starting lineup Monday, July 4. INF Darwin Barney draws into the lineup at third base and is batting ninth against Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Smoak is mired in a 10-for-66 funk dating back to Wednesday, June 1 with a .597 OPS. At this point, he is nothing more than a low-end option in deep mixed and AL-only leagues. While Barney has proven capable of reaching base, his .387 slugging percentage and just 10 RBI through 182 plate appearances highlight his limited fantasy upside. He's a low-priced flier in daily contests and depth piece in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues.
