The latest Brian Matusz MLB and fantasy baseball news
Sat, 20 Apr 2013 14:14:19 -0700 Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter said the team believes RP Brian Matusz still has the potential to be a starting pitcher but will keep him in the bullpen for now.
Fri, 29 Mar 2013 12:36:21 -0700 Baltimore Orioles RP Brian Matusz will start the season pitching out of the bullpen. OF Chris Dickerson was reassigned to minor league camp Friday, March 29. Fantasy Tip: Matusz excelled in relief last season, and the O's decided he helps their club best by staying there. This ruins his fantasy value for now, but it helps Baltimore in the long run. It's not out of the question that he will be a starter again at some point.
Wed, 27 Mar 2013 14:01:58 -0700 Baltimore Orioles SPs Jake Arrieta, Brian Matusz and Jair Jurrjens are the candidates for the final rotation spot, and Arrieta is considered the front-runner. Matusz is expected to rejoin the bullpen if he doesn't win the job.
Mon, 25 Feb 2013 16:18:17 -0800 Baltimore Orioles SP Brian Matusz gave up a pair of singles in two scoreless innings against the New York Yankees in his spring debut Monday, Feb. 25, and was pleased with his outing. "I thought I felt good from the get-go," said Matusz, who said he was primarily working on his fastball and changeup. Matusz retired the side in the second inning on 11 pitches (seven strikes) and he threw 20 of his 30 total pitches for strikes. His fastball sat at 91-92 mph as he competes for a rotation spot.
Fri, 18 Jan 2013 11:25:23 -0800 The Baltimore Orioles avoided arbitration with 1B Chris Davis, RP Brian Matusz and P Troy Patton Friday, Jan. 18, by agreeing to one-year deals with each of them. Davis will make $3.3 million, Matusz will earn $1.6 million and Patton will receive $815,000 in 2013.
Mon, 14 Jan 2013 12:34:53 -0800 The Baltimore Orioles avoided arbitration with SP Tommy Hunter Monday, Jan. 14, by agreeing to a one-year, $1.82 million deal. He made $493,500 last season. The team is also expected to reach a deal with RP Brian Matusz to avoid salary arbitration. Matusz will have four years of arbitration as a Super 2 player.
Thu, 03 Jan 2013 23:46:30 -0800 Baltimore Orioles general manager Dan Duquette has said he would be open to adding another relief pitcher, even though he has a full relief corps. The Orioles currently have CL Jim Johnson and RP's Pedro Strop, Darren O'Day, Luis Ayala and Troy Patton. RP Tommy Hunter is a likely candidate to return, as is RP Brian Matusz. "The bullpen was strong last year," Duquette said. "These guys are at the age where some of them should improve and a couple of them should be able to maintain and perform at the level they did this past year, but that wouldn't preclude us from adding some additional depth to our pitching staff."
Sat, 29 Dec 2012 20:26:16 -0800 Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter has several in-house candidates for the fifth starter job heading into spring training. Those candidates include SPs Jake Arrieta, Zach Britton, Brian Matusz, Tommy Hunter, Steven Johnson and T.J. McFarland. The Orioles would likely prefer to keep Arrieta and Britton as starters at Triple-A Norfolk if they can't win a big-league rotation job in the spring.
Tue, 04 Dec 2012 15:27:49 -0800 Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter said OF Nolan Reimold (neck), SP Brian Matusz (hernia) and SP Tsuyoshi Wada (elbow) are all recovering well. Showalter expects Wada to be back much earlier than expected.
Wed, 07 Nov 2012 14:22:05 -0800 Baltimore Orioles SP Brian Matusz (abdominal) is on track to be ready for spring training after undergoing surgery to fix a rectus abdominis tear last month. "It didn't get worse; it actually stayed the same," Matusz said of the injury, which prevented him from sprinting but didn't bother him lifting or on the mound. "(I'm) doing rehab-type work right now. ... Within the next couple weeks, I plan on starting to lift heavy weights again. It's healing pretty quick." The team will look at him as a starter again next spring.
