Pirates | Pedro Alvarez not hitting Tuesday

Tue, 21 Apr 2015 13:16:50 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, April 21, against the Chicago Cubs. 1B Corey Hart is in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: It's likely Alvarez ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) is out because the Cubs are facing a lefty in Travis Wood. Hart ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) is 3-for-11 in his last seven games with one home run and four RBIs, so he may be worth a little money if you're looking to skimp on first basemen.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez at ease at 1B?

Tue, 14 Apr 2015 09:03:20 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is making the move across the diamond from third base to first base this year, and scouts who watched him in spring training said he looked much more comfortable at first base and thought he'd benefit offensively from the move. Alvarez hit just .231 with 18 home runs and a .405 slugging percentage in 2014. The Pirates can choose to start OF Corey Hart at first base against tough left-handed pitchers, and 2B Sean Rodriguez has been a defensive replacement for Alvarez at first four times in the opening week. "He's given a 100% effort to be a really good first baseman -- not just stand at the position between at-bats," general manager Neal Huntington said.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) is off to a fine start in 2015, with seven hits in his first 23 at-bats (.304) and three home runs. You'll only want to play him at FantasyScore against right-handed pitchers, though, as he hit just .175 with two of his 18 dingers against southpaws last year. He's an attractive play Tuesday against Tigers starter Shane Greene.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez tweaks swing

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 06:56:51 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez and hitting coach Jeff Branson are experimenting with a mechanical adjustment designed to relax his swing. As Alvarez awaits pitches, he rests his bat on his left shoulder before lifting it into a hitting position. For the majority of his career, Alvarez held his hands in a position parallel to but several inches away from his left shoulder before triggering his swing. Alvarez went 3-for-4 with three extra-base hits and three RBIs Friday, March 20.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez has moved across the diamond to first base this year, but he'll still be eligible at third base in most traditional leagues. On FantasyScore, he checks in at $4,300 (8.6% of your cap), which is a good price if his success translates into the season.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez wins in arbitration

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 11:07:00 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez won his arbitration case, and he'll make $5.75 million this year instead of the $5.25 million the team was offering.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez has the kind of pop that will make him a consideration for your fantasy baseball teams in the later rounds of drafts, but you'll have to live with a low batting average. Perhaps the transition to first base will keep him in the lineup on a consistent basis.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez happy with transition to 1B

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 10:22:05 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is easing into the transition from third to first base this year, and he's happy about the switch. Alvarez is expected to start at first base on opening day. "I feel very good about it. Very positive," Alvarez said. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to go out there and compete over there. I'm taking it day by day, taking in as much as I can to learn the position."

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez failed to reach 20 homers a year after smacking 36 round trippers in 2013. Now that he's unlikely to be a defensive liability, Alvarez could stick in the lineup more often. There's no denying that his power abilities will help you in the later rounds of a fantasy baseball draft, and having eligibility at third and first base is an added bonus. That's if you can live with his poor batting average.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez could move to first base

Sat, 18 Oct 2014 12:25:41 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez could be moved across the diamond to play first base next season. He committed 25 errors at the hot corner in 2014 and developed a throwing issue late in the year. General manager Neal Huntington said he still views Alvarez as a third baseman and added that the team will try to help him work through his throwing challenges during the offseason, although people around the league still believe he will wind up playing first.
