Pirates | Won't use Pedro Alvarez at third often

Tue, 19 Aug 2014 13:24:02 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez will not play third base often, if at all for the remainder of the season, according to manager Clint Hurdle.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez's at-bats are likely to take a significant hit. He could prove to be unworthy of a roster spot in the majority of formats. If you have the luxury to be patient in deep mixed leagues, see how Hurdle handles Alvarez's playing time before you cut ties.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez to start at first base

Mon, 18 Aug 2014 14:00:56 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez is starting at first base Monday, Aug. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez is getting his first start at first base and likely will be spending more time at the position next season. He is still considered a third baseman in most fantasy leagues and has not hit a home run in about a month, which makes him a risky play.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez's defense will be monitored

Fri, 15 Aug 2014 13:35:00 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez's defense will be watched, and he could be replaced late in games with a superior defender, according to manager Clint Hurdle.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez struggles at the plate are more concerning to fantasy owners. However, it appears being a defensively liability could continue to eat into his at-bats, which obviously has no positive spin. Alvarez is a streaky source of power, and worth a flier in deep mixed leagues. He should be owned in all NL-only formats.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez could serve as DH

Wed, 13 Aug 2014 11:41:25 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez could serve as the team's designated hitter for the games against the Detroit Tigers Wednesday, Aug. 13, and Thursday, Aug. 14, according to manager Clint Hurdle.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez could also see his playing time rise in the near future if he starts playing first base on a semi-regular basis. He'll be a very cheap option in daily leagues when he's back in the lineup.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez close to debuting at 1B

Mon, 11 Aug 2014 14:36:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez is close to playing his first game at first base, according to manager Clint Hurdle. "He's working his backside off to find a level of comfort and say, 'Okay. I'm ready to go over there in a major league game,'" Hurdle said. "I think we're real close to that. There will be a day here soon when you'll see him over there." Alvarez has been looking smooth at first base after losing his starting job at third base because of his poor throws. He's unlikely to start at first before this weekend, though, and he'll probably be used as the designated hitter Wednesday, Aug. 13, and Thursday, Aug. 14.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez still has plenty of pop in his bat, but inconsistent at-bats make him very tough to keep on a roster in mixed leagues. It's unclear how often he'll play if he proves efficient at his new position, but there is hope. Ike Davis could really lose out here.
