Cubs | Travis Wood to start Cactus opener

Sat, 27 Feb 2016 21:16:00 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Travis Wood will start the team's first Cactus League game Thursday, March 3, against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Fantasy Tip: Wood is expected to work from the bullpen, but the team will keep him stretched out in case he is needed for spot starts or if someone in the rotation goes down early in the season. Avoid him in all but the deepest of NL-only fantasy leagues in his current spot.

Cubs | Chicago's rotation competition

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 12:45:01 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel, who battled through a calf injury and posted a 5.10 ERA in the second half, isn't a lock for the starting rotation after the additions of SPs John Lackey and Adam Warren. Hammel also had a 14.55 ERA in two playoff starts. The Cubs are also paying Hammel $9 million in 2016, and he did have a 2.86 first-half ERA.

SP Kyle Hendricks may be fighting for a job as the No. 5 starter. "Those things will work out," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "We have a lot of guys that can start in the big leagues and I'm sure a lot of those guys will make starts for the Cubs next year." SPs Trevor Cahill, Travis Wood and Clayton Richard are also vying for rotation jobs this spring, but none are likely to beat out both Hendricks and Warren.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey and Hammel should have rotation spots locked up, with Warren on the outside looking in. Lackey is a vet that will see correction to his ERA, but he remains a viable late-round option to round out your staff. Hammel and Kendricks are speculative grabs in deep mixed affairs.

Cubs | Two Cubs avoid arbitration

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 10:34:43 -0800

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon and RP Travis Wood avoided arbitration by signing one-year deals Friday, Jan. 15. Rondon landed $4.2 million, and Wood tallied $6.17 million.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon had a breakout season, mostly as their closer, with 30 saves, a 1.67 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He's a solid RP2. Wood turned into a shutdown reliever last season after allowing a .423 batting average after 46 pitches as a starter. He's an NL-only option for his 10.55 K/9.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta to be tendered

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 11:46:10 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta is expected to be tendered a contract by the deadline Wednesday, Dec. 2. SP Travis Wood, RPs Pedro Strop, Hector Rondon, Justin Grimm, Ryan Cook and Rex Brothers and OF Chris Coghlan are also expected to be tendered. Arrieta will be a free agent after the 2017 season, and the Cubs are interested in a long-term deal.

Fantasy Tip: After Arrieta's Cy Young season in 2015, he'll surely be very expensive in fantasy baseball drafts next spring. He has now risen to the elite level of starting pitchers, and you'll have to spend an early round pick to secure him.

Cubs | Travis Wood starting vs. Cards Saturday

Fri, 18 Sep 2015 15:49:20 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Travis Wood is starting against the St. Louis Cardinals Saturday, Sept. 19.

Fantasy Tip: Wood ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) has been pitching out of the bullpen, so his upside to return the four-point win bonus might be slim. After all, he hasn't pitched four innings in a single outing since Thursday, May 14. Still, at his cap hit, there could be upside. All said, you'll likely want to fade Wood at FantasyScore Saturday.

Cubs | Travis Wood starting Saturday

Sat, 12 Sep 2015 14:51:05 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Travis Wood is starting in place of SP Dan Haren Saturday, Sept. 12, due to weather uncertainty. Haren was pushed back to Sunday, Sept. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Wood ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) isn't a good FantasyScore start against the Philadelphia Phillies due to the weather.

Cubs | Tsuyoshi Wada in danger of losing spot?

Mon, 08 Jun 2015 10:25:32 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Tsuyoshi Wada could be in danger of losing his spot in the starting rotation after being beaten up by the Washington Nationals in just 3 2/3 innings Friday, June 5, although manager Joe Maddon said he's not ready to make a change just yet. Ps Travis Wood and Edwin Jackson are candidates from the bullpen that could shift to a starting post. Wood has given up two runs in 6 1/3 innings since moving to the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Wada ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) is obviously a weak FantasyScore option if he remains in the rotation, and he doesn't have much strikeout upside. Neither does Wood if he were to return to a starting role. None of Chicago's options to fill out the backside of the rotation should be owned in shallow mixed leagues.

Cubs | Travis Wood to bullpen

Sat, 16 May 2015 16:49:09 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Travis Wood has been moved to the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Wood filled in for Hector Rondon for a save Saturday. Rondon had pitched three straight days and four of five days. He was warming in the bullpen behind Wood, so it doesn't seem like he has been demoted, but you never know with Joe Maddon. Wood loses most of his fantasy value if he pitches in middle relief.

Cubs | Travis Wood better at home

Thu, 14 May 2015 10:10:30 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Travis Wood is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA compared to 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA in four road starts this season. He's also 1-0 with a 2.37 ERA in three career starts against the New York Mets at Wrigley Field. Wood has allowed 12 total runs in his last nine innings, to go 0-1 in his two May outings, though.

Fantasy Tip: Wood ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) is 2-2 this year with a 4.96 ERA and 1.22 WHIP while fanning 34 hitters in 32 2/3 innings. His K/9 of 9.4 is nearly two strikeouts per inning above his mark last year, so expect that to come down. Wood is a risky FantasyScore option, even against the slumping Mets.

Cubs | Travis Wood with two-start week

Sat, 25 Apr 2015 16:45:17 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Travis Wood will face the Pittsburgh Pirates Monday, April 27, and is slated to face the Milwaukee Brewers the following weekend.

Fantasy Tip: Wood ($3,700, 7.4% of your cap) is off to a good start with a 3.24 ERA and 17 K's in 16 2/3 innings. He'll be a solid low-end starter to use on FantasyScore next week, especially for the Brewers game.
