The Chicago Cubs have a plethora of options for the starting rotation as they approach spring training this year. The candidates include SPs Matt Garza, Paul Maholm, Ryan Dempster, Travis Wood, Chris Volstad, Randy Wells and Casey Coleman. Wood and Maholm are the only left-handers in the group.

The Cincinnati Reds are in conversations with the Chicago Cubs about RP Sean Marshall. Marshall has been one of the top setup pitchers in baseball over the last two seasons, finishing 2011 with a 2.26 ERA in 78 appearances. In exchange, the Cubs are interested in SP Travis Wood.

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Reds SP Dontrelle Willis (back) might start Saturday, Sept. 24, or Sunday, Sept. 25. He was scratched from his start Monday, Sept. 19, due to back spasms. "He says he feels better today," manager Dusty Baker said. "We're going to keep everybody else on and it'll probably be Dontrelle or (SP Travis Wood) or Wood and Dontrelle. It depends on how (Willis) feels and if he can get a bullpen or something in between."
