Cubs | Hector Rondon unavailable

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 09:42:18 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon and RP Travis Wood are unavailable Wednesday, June 29.

Fantasy Tip: That would leave Pedro Strop or Trevor Cahill if a save chance presented itself. If you're desperate for saves and have daily waiver moves, it might behoove you to snag Strop.

Cubs | Jason Hammel expected to be fine

Tue, 31 May 2016 07:36:18 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel (hamstring) is expected to be able to make his next start after leaving early with a hamstring cramp against the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday, May 30. However, the Cubs are 21 games over .500 and probably won't take any chances with his health. Hammel injured his calf before the All-Star break last year and was never the same. Ps Travis Wood or Trevor Cahill could start a game if needed.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel tossed two scoreless innings before departing to drop his ERA on the year to 2.09. The way he's throwing this year, he should remain in starting lineups in all formats if he's able to make his next start.

Cubs | Travis Wood to start Cactus opener

Sat, 27 Feb 2016 21:16:00 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Travis Wood will start the team's first Cactus League game Thursday, March 3, against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Fantasy Tip: Wood is expected to work from the bullpen, but the team will keep him stretched out in case he is needed for spot starts or if someone in the rotation goes down early in the season. Avoid him in all but the deepest of NL-only fantasy leagues in his current spot.

Cubs | Chicago's rotation competition

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 12:45:01 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel, who battled through a calf injury and posted a 5.10 ERA in the second half, isn't a lock for the starting rotation after the additions of SPs John Lackey and Adam Warren. Hammel also had a 14.55 ERA in two playoff starts. The Cubs are also paying Hammel $9 million in 2016, and he did have a 2.86 first-half ERA.

SP Kyle Hendricks may be fighting for a job as the No. 5 starter. "Those things will work out," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "We have a lot of guys that can start in the big leagues and I'm sure a lot of those guys will make starts for the Cubs next year." SPs Trevor Cahill, Travis Wood and Clayton Richard are also vying for rotation jobs this spring, but none are likely to beat out both Hendricks and Warren.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey and Hammel should have rotation spots locked up, with Warren on the outside looking in. Lackey is a vet that will see correction to his ERA, but he remains a viable late-round option to round out your staff. Hammel and Kendricks are speculative grabs in deep mixed affairs.

Cubs | Two Cubs avoid arbitration

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 10:34:43 -0800

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon and RP Travis Wood avoided arbitration by signing one-year deals Friday, Jan. 15. Rondon landed $4.2 million, and Wood tallied $6.17 million.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon had a breakout season, mostly as their closer, with 30 saves, a 1.67 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He's a solid RP2. Wood turned into a shutdown reliever last season after allowing a .423 batting average after 46 pitches as a starter. He's an NL-only option for his 10.55 K/9.
