"It's a give and take and that's a breath of fresh air around here, being able to give ideas and everyone giving ideas and let's pick the best ones that work for everybody."

Hall of Fame RB Marshall Faulk defended former St. Louis Rams head coach and former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz, saying his former coach was forced to work with "lesser talent" during his two-year run with the Bears. "Listen man, I'm going to say this and whoever plays for the Bears, if they want to have a conversation with me, so be it: Martz was working with lesser talent than he was accustomed to working with," Faulk said Tuesday, Jan. 31. "If they keep providing you lesser talent, you have to leave. I mean, other than RB Matt Forte, there wasn't anybody who would scare a defense. When you go and get WR Roy Williams and he becomes your No. 1 wide receiver, that's an issue. I'm defending Mike because I can only imagine how hard it was to game plan (with that roster)."

Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith was put off by multiple reports that offensive coordinator Mike Martz will not return in 2012. Martz is in the final year of his deal. "If there's a change that will be made, I'll be making it, and I definitely haven't discussed that with anyone," Smith said. "So, I'm sure there are a lot of things out there that people make up. That has to be made up because nothing like that came from me. It should definitely stop right there."
Mon, 05 Dec 2011 07:48:20 -0800
Chicago Bears WR Devin Hester said he is not in favor of the team signing free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings). Hester believes McNabb could not get up to speed fast enough with the Bears' offense to make a difference. And Hester even suggested that McNabb's arrival could be counterproductive, as any time spent working with McNabb would take away from time the rest of the offense needs to work with QB Caleb Hanie. "It's going to be tough right now to pick up a quarterback that hasn't played in the Mike Martz offense," Hester said. "This is a difficult offense to run, so as far as a quarterback who hasn't played in the offense, right now it's going to be a waste of time."
Thu, 01 Dec 2011 07:14:20 -0800

"You know, anything about those kinds of things, I would never discuss. I have a job, and this job is the only one I can discuss. It would be very inappropriate for me to talk about anything like that," Martz said.

There is speculation that Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz might be in his final season with the team after his contract expires at the end of the year. Martz has had his struggles with Chicago's offense, and offensive line coach Mike Tice might be ready to take over the role. However, Martz has made adjustments to a slow start to the season that has led to QB Jay Cutler winding up on his back often; on both of Cutler's touchdown passes in Week 6, the team had seven players in to block.
Mon, 17 Oct 2011 04:21:15 -0700
Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler gave credit for his 115.9 passer rating in Week 6 to offensive coordinator Mike Martz for using a lot of five-step drops instead of seven-step drops and leaving extra blockers in to help the tackles. Cutler hopes to see more of the same strategy moving forward. "We've got to be judicious going forward in what we can do and can't do," Cutler said.
Fri, 14 Oct 2011 07:41:06 -0700
Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz will not move from the coaches' box to the sidelines following the trouble the team has had getting plays to QB Jay Cutler. "I still give the play to (QB coach) Shane (Day) and he gets it in. I think we're good there. Obviously I think it's more an issue with the headsets and things than anything else," Martz said.
Mon, 26 Sep 2011 07:06:12 -0700
Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is not happy with how unbalanced the team's offense has been over the last two games. "We're 0-2 doing this, so it's not looking very good," Cutler said. The Bears rushed just 12 times for 13 yards in Week 3, their lowest rushing total since at least 1960. Cutler, meanwhile, threw 37 passes in the game. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz called 43 pass plays and only nine running plays in Week 3. A week earlier, Martz called 52 passes and 11 runs in a loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz said his team could play in the Hall of Fame Game on a day's notice if necessary. "If we report to camp and they say, 'Tomorrow, you're playing the game,' that'll be plenty," Martz said Wednesday, July 13. WR Devin Hester said he believes players would need a week-and-a-half of practice to prepare for the game. Martz wouldn't say exactly how much time they would need, but he did say they could be ready rather quickly. "You don't do game plans for those games, anyway," Martz said. "It's not like a regular-season game at all. There's not a whole lot of game preparation. You look at personnel, things of that nature, and clean things up execution-wise. The preparation for preseason games, particularly the first one, is not real hard."

Although Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz turned down a contract extension from the team, he downplayed any hard feelings toward the organization. "I have a representative in Bob LaMonte who's the best at what he does," Martz said. "I just do whatever he tells me to. He doesn't tell me how to coach, and I don't tell him how to negotiate. But he knows how badly I want to be here, and I would like an extension. I don't worry about it. I'm sure it'll work out."

Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz took blame for the team's poor performance in Week 4, according to Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Tribune. "Let me just tell you guys this, I just feel terrible," Martz said. "The defense had a great effort. I just tried to do way too much in a short week with these guys. They are not ready for that. We have a bunch of young guys trying to learn how to play and we lost our poise, got on our heels and couldn't do much of anything right. That's an old coach's fault right there." The Bears totaled a meager 110 yards of total offense, their lowest total since 2000.

Martz has had the ability to fix struggling offensive units throughout his career. "Most of it has to do with his ability to assess talent and get everybody on the same page and up and going pretty quickly," Angelo said. "I am starting to see that right now in our practices. The guys are starting to click in terms of what he's doing, and it's his ability to assess what we have. It's exciting, the things that Martz has brought with him."

Martz said backup QB Caleb Hanie has "unusual skills" and was impressed by rookie QB Dan LeFevour during the team's minicamp. Martz added, "Caleb is going to be a good player but you really don't know. ... Caleb will be all right. [But] it gives you that insurance. It would make us all feel a little easier with a veteran because you just never know."

Updating a previous item, ESPNChicago.com reports free-agent WR Torry Holt (Jaguars) said during a radio interview Friday, Feb. 12, that he would be a good fit for the Chicago Bears offense due to his relationship with new offensive coordinator Mike Martz. "I think I could fit in really well with that ballclub and add a really good veteran presence," Holt said. "In (Martz's) system you've got to be able to run," Holt aded. "That's one of the things I would tell those guys, you better be able to run, and you better be cerebral to learn, and you better have thick skin because he is so demanding. You are working with a guy who is a perfectionist. If you can't do those three things and you're not tough and you're not willing to go and block and be efficient and be quick you will not play in his system."
Tue, 09 Feb 2010 09:00:21 -0800
Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Tribune, reports Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz said during a radio interview that he envisions WR Devin Hester as a dominant slot receiver, a shift that could result in him being removed from the starting lineup. However, Martz could utilize plenty of three-wide receiver sets, which would provide Hester with ample opportunity to start. "Devin Hester in that role could just be stupid good, if that makes sense to you," Martz said. "What we can do with him inside, the matchups we can get with him on third corners, safeties and linebackers would be absolutely remarkable." Martz is cognizant of Hester's role on special teams and the value that he brings to the team as a returner and sees a way for him to excel in all areas. "I think it would be very difficult for him take every snap as a wide receiver and play at a high level on special teams, so we have to look at that," Martz said. "I think the role I have in mind for him would allow him to do both and do it at a high level."

I haven't run his system, but I am familiar with it. I'm anxious to start digesting the playbook and getting back on the field."

Neil Hayes, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith said the team will not abandon the running game under new offensive coordinator Mike Martz. "When I say get off the bus running the football, I mean that is a mind-set," Smith said. "The run will always be a part of what we're going to do. (We play in) Chicago, we play in the elements. That won't change. But there's nothing wrong with being able to run the football well and having balance to be able to pass the football. That's what I'm excited about."

Vaughn McClure and Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Tribune, report Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz said TE Greg Olsen, who led the team with 60 receptions in 2009, will be an important part of his scheme. Martz has been criticized for not using his tight ends in the passing game. "Like all the positions, you take a look at what you have at tight end and who that guy is and what they can do and then you go from there,'' Martz said. "In the past, we've always had these big, physical tight ends who really we tried to utilize in the running game and as pass blockers and then as wide receivers. Greg is different. When you can get … him matched up on linebackers and safeties, it's going to be a mismatch. And then his ability to still stand in there and slug it out, he's a complete player from every respect at that position.''
Mon, 01 Feb 2010 17:40:47 -0800
The Chicago Tribune reports Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz is excited about the team's wide receivers. Martz said, "I'm really excited about their speed and the potential.
