Wed, 09 May 2012 06:16:59 -0700 Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren said he spoke with the Indianapolis Colts about the possibility of trading up in the NFL Draft to select QB Andrew Luck, in addition to the Washington Redskins about Robert Griffin III.
Wed, 09 May 2012 05:59:02 -0700 Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren said rookie QB Brandon Weeden must earn the team's starting job this season; he'll still have to beat out QBs Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace for the job. "We drafted a young quarterback that we think can come in and play right away, but we're not just going to hand him the football," Holmgren said. "I still love Colt McCoy (but) we had a chance to get a mature quarterback who has a chance to come in and contribute right away. Whether that happens or not we have to let it play out."
Sat, 05 May 2012 05:50:49 -0700 Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren disputed a report that the team got fooled into trading up to the No. 3 overall slot with the Minnesota Vikings to draft RB Trent Richardson. "Contrary to what was written and said, we had to compete," said Holmgren. "We weren't the Lone Ranger in that deal." Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said multiple teams were after the pick, even hours before the draft. Holmgren also stressed that he urged general manager Tom Heckert and head coach Pat Shurmur not to let Richardson slip away. "You don't want to be up there, really," Holmgren said. "But we were up there so it was very, very important who we chose there. That's why we targeted Trent. We didn't want to lose him."
Mon, 30 Apr 2012 07:24:57 -0700 Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren said he still believes in QB Colt McCoy but also wanted to add competition in the form of QB Brandon Weeden. "I like him a lot," Holmgren said of McCoy. "He's tough, but (we) still wanted to see if someone else could be the man."
Mon, 16 Apr 2012 06:51:25 -0700 Cleveland Browns general manager Tom Heckert reportedly loves Oklahoma State WR Justin Blackmon and that would be his pick with the No. 4 overall pick in the NFL Draft; however, president Mike Holmgren is still trying to decide with finality if Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill is the franchise quarterback worth taking.
Thu, 09 Feb 2012 07:40:36 -0800 Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren said he is thrilled with the addition of offensive coordinator Brad Childress. Childress should help develop the team's quarterbacks. "He's an excellent football coach, a very, very bright guy, knows how to coach quarterbacks," Holmgren said. "He's a tough guy, he demands a lot and I think it was a great hire for Pat (Shurmur)."
Thu, 15 Dec 2011 06:37:17 -0800 Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren said head coach Pat Shurmur is "a very competent young head coach who will be here for a long time."
Mon, 14 Mar 2011 11:42:12 -0700 Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren said that defensive line is a need entering the offseason but also said the team will look at cornerbacks because a team can never have enough cornerbacks, according to Mary Kay Cabot, of The Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Thu, 24 Feb 2011 06:15:13 -0800 Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren said Wednesday, Feb. 23, he is likely to select a quarterback prospect at some point in the 2011 NFL Draft, according to Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "Oh, yeah, we will draft a quarterback. You can almost count on it," Holmgren said. However, Holmgren added he is not planning on displacing QB Colt McCoy as the starter. "I believe in the young guy we have," Holmgren said. "I'm pretty sure we'll take one later in the draft."
Thu, 24 Feb 2011 05:50:43 -0800 Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren said Wednesay, Feb. 23, he is looking to add an impact offensive player with the No. 6 overall pick in the NFL Draft, even though the team could also address their defense, according to Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I'm also looking for a home-run hitter," Holmgren said. "We do (have a lot of work to do on defense) and it is (a good draft for defense). But I think you have to be a little careful of thinking too much about needs so that you reach. I don't want to do that. So our philosophy is to take the best player on our board once it's set up. Now, if you have two guys that are (really close), then we'd have a discussion on which one to take."
