Redskins | Fassel shocked by Zorn hiring

Tue, 12 Feb 2008 08:59:34 -0800

Clark Judge, of CBSSports.com, reports Jim Fassel was shocked over the Washington Redskins decision to hire Jim Zorn as the team's head coach over him. Fassel believes his dismissal from the Baltimore Ravens in 2006 convinced Redskins owner Daniel Snyder not to hire him. "This is a shock to me," Fassel said. "At the end of the day, Dan wanted to make a big splash, and I think he was worried about the Baltimore thing. He worried about the public relations (fallout), and he didn't know which way to go." Fassel added he believes there were "forces" working behind the scenes, particularly vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato, that began to promote Zorn at his expense.

Jim Fassel, who was expecting an offer from the team this week, is still a strong candidate for the job, according to a source close to Fassel. However, the Redskins may be extending their search until after the Super Bowl to interview potential candidates such as Josh McDaniels of the New England Patriots or Steve Spagnuolo of the New York Giants. Former head coach Joe Gibbs has already called his former assistants still under contract with the Redskins to inform them of the expected delay in hiring a new head coach.
