Washington Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett is optimistic that the team's defense will improve this year. "I like our guys. I really do," Haslett said. "We've got a good group. We've got some versatility to do different things." Haslett believes improvement on the part of the team's young secondary will help the unit as a whole. "You've got to have some guys grow up," he said. "It's a maturation process. We expect all of those guys to get better and better."

Washington Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett likes what he sees from his defense this season. The past four years, Haslett's job was made tougher as head coach Mike Shanahan continually tinkered with the defense, according to people within the organization. Now, the club has committed $26 million in guaranteed money to retain LB Brian Orakpo and DT Chris Baker. Haslett is optimistic that the team will generate more of a pass rush, and he's also excited about improvement in the secondary.

Washington Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett said the team has watched plenty of film of the University of Oregon's offense to prepare for the Philadelphia Eagles Week 1. Head coach Chip Kelly left Oregon to take the head coaching job with the Eagles. "We've looked at endless film on Oregon," Haslett said. "It's a little bit different because they do some things in college they can't do up here. But it's basically the same, what we saw on film last week [in the Eagles' preseason opener]. I think Chip will do a great job there because they've got great skill players on offense. … So I think they'll be successful in what they do and how they do it. But hopefully we'll play well in that first game."

Haslett provided Haynesworth with a better understanding of the scheme and his role in it. "What I was told earlier was completely different from what we're doing now," Haynesworth said. "Getting with (defensive coordinator Jim) Haslett these last few weeks has really cleared up a whole lot of stuff. I really enjoy it, and it's great to have him on my side to help me with the defense and stuff."

Updating a previous report, Steve Korte, of the Belleville News Democrat, reports St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (concussion) will have to pass a neuropsych test Wednesday, Nov. 26, in order to play in the team's Week 13 game. Head coach Jim Haslett said does not think the concussion is as bad as the ones Bugler has suffered previously. "I thought he cleared up pretty, and at the end of the game he felt good. I don't think it's as bad as the ones in his past," Haslett said.

The Associated Press reports St. Louis Rams head coach Jim Haslett said RB Steven Jackson's (quadriceps) injury is related to his 27-day holdout during training camp. "It happens all the time. You can run all you want, you can lift weights all you want, but until you put pads on and you actually cut and move at full speed, you can't replicate that until you actually do it," Haslett said. Jackson said the football season is long and gruesome, and his injury was a freak injury.

Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams head coach Jim Haslett is undecided as to who the team's starting quarterback will be Week 11. "I don't know yet," he said. "I haven't decided anything on anybody yet." QB Trent Green replaced QB Marc Bulger after the Rams fell behind 40-0 to the New York Jets at intermission in Week 10. Bulger had a woeful 29.3 passer rating by completing six of 13 tosses for 65 yards and throwing an interception.
