Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith indicated the team's offensive philosophy regarding the tight end is about to change under new offensive coordinator Mike Tice. "I would say that all eight years I've been here the tight end needs to be a big part of what we do," Smith said. "We plan on doing that. And as far as coming out this year, there are only so many receivers you can throw the ball to. You can choose to make it your wide receiver. Or you can make it your running back or your tight end. But there are only so many guys, there are only so many passes to go around. You have to be smart with how you distribute those."

There is speculation that Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz might be in his final season with the team after his contract expires at the end of the year. Martz has had his struggles with Chicago's offense, and offensive line coach Mike Tice might be ready to take over the role. However, Martz has made adjustments to a slow start to the season that has led to QB Jay Cutler winding up on his back often; on both of Cutler's touchdown passes in Week 6, the team had seven players in to block.

Vito Stellino, of The Florida Times-Union, reports one of the reasons the Jacksonville Jaguars feel optimistic about the 2009 season is an improved team chemistry and atmosphere after the departure of several players who had character issues or who were unproductive on the field. "We had some things going on, and coach (Jack) Del Rio took care of that and (general manager) Gene Smith took care of that," assistant coach Mike Tice said. "That was great. It makes it a lot easier for us to coach." General manager Gene Smith has also noticed a difference during offseason workouts. "I think there's better peer leadership," Smith said. "There's a different level of accountability. I think they have a greater understanding that it's a privilege to be in the NFL. I've seen a lot more self-discipline in the players with their mental focus. I'm a firm believer that mental will win more than physical skill."

Del Rio said the Dolphins have not asked permission to interview Tice.

The Star Tribune reports a Minnesota Vikings official refused to comment Thursday, Feb. 2, when asked if the team planned to file a tampering charge against former head coach Mike Tice for comments he made on a Jacksonville radio station a day earlier. Tice was named the Jacksonville Jaguars assistant head coach/offense Wednesday, Feb 1. The Vikings appear to have grounds for the charge based on Tice's admission that he already had talked to one of their potential free agents about the chance of joining him in Jacksonville. Vikings vice president of public affairs Lester Bagley said he had no comment on the subject.

Jets' general manager Terry Bradway said through a team spokesman that Tice was "well prepared and did a good job." However, indications are New England Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini could be offered the position as early as Tuesday, Jan. 17, when Bradway, assistant GM Mike Tannenbaum and owner Woody Johnson huddle to make a decision.

Ken Berger, of Newsday, reports the New York Jets continue to mull over their choices for new head coach and Mike Tice and New England Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini appear to remain the top two choices. According to a person familiar with the Jets' thinking, general manager Terry Bradway is the most difficult member of the decision-making team to read. It is clear that assistant general manager Mike Tannenbaum and team president Jay Cross prefer Mangini, but Bradway is believed to favor Tice. Owner Woody Johnson, apparently, is undecided.

The two candidates are New England Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini and former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Tice. Tice's track record, 32-33 with one playoff appearance in four full seasons plus a 0-1 record as interim coach in 2001 with the Vikings, is on paper in black and white. Mangini's connections and apparent brilliance as a coach are harder to quantify.

Sexton said his client wants to land another top job. Sexton defended Tice's coaching record, highlighted by a playoff victory over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field last season. "He took over a team in absolute disarray and slowly built it back into a playoff team last year, and on the verge of one last year," Sexton said. "That's why he wants to keep coaching."

Bob Sansevere, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings owner Zygi Wilf handled the firing of former head coach Mike Tice poorly. Rather than allowing Tice to address the team, Wilf had a news release handed out to players and coaches in the locker room stating Tice had been fired. Wilf plans to hold a news conference Monday, Jan. 2.
