Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey said Tuesday, Dec. 20, he isn't questioning whether changes need to be made to his coaching staff. Gailey said there's enough blame to go around rather than have him single out anyone on a team that has lost seven straight games. "You lose this many games in a row, we all get criticism," Gailey said. "There's nobody that escapes criticism when you're doing what we're doing right now." Gailey denied a report that assistant coach Dave Wannstedt had become more involved in defensive playcalling duties.

"I believe that it's the proper decision at this time in terms of being a professional ... I have too much respect for the players in this organization and the ownership of this organization to allow myself and my situation to be the focal point for the remainder of the football season," Wannstedt said. "There are a number of things that you can point to if you want to look for reasons why I'm here standing in front of you today. Many of those things I had no control over, but those things are not important today. Nobody wants to hear about excuses. Someone has to accept the responsibility, the ultimate responsibility, I'm the head coach, and that falls on me."

Alex Marvez and Craig Barnes, of the Sun-Sentinel, report Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Jim Bates will take over as the team's interim head coach, replacing Dave Wannstedt, who is expected to resign Tuesday, Nov. 9. Bates, 48, has been the team's defensive coordinator since 2000 and is the team's only member of the coaching staff with professional head coaching experience. He held the position with the San Antonio Gunslingers, of the United States Football League in 1985.

Wannstedt has already reportedly met with Dolphins' owner Wayne Huizenga, who confirmed an announcement will be made Nov. 9. "Dave called me and we got together, but I'm not going to comment at this point," Huizenga told The Associated Press. No announcement has been made regarding Wannstedt's replacement.

Alex Marvez, of the Miami Sun-Sentinel, reports the Miami Dolphins Week 9 game against the Arizona Cardinals is a pivotal game for head coach Dave Wannstedt, who is on the hot seat after a 1-7 start to the season and an embarrassing 41-14 loss to the divisional rival New York Jets on Monday night last week. Although Wannstedt was given a vote of confidence by team owner Wayne Huizenga two weeks ago, there is speculation the club could make a coaching change by next week, as the team has a BYE in Week 10. If a change is made, defensive coordinator Jim Bates is considered the leading candidate to step into that role.

Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt was deposed Wednesday, June 23, in the malpractice and gross negligence case of former Dolphins WR O.J. McDuffie, attorney Herman Russomanno said. McDuffie is suing former Dolphins team doctor John Uribe, current orthopedic consultants Dan Kanell and George Caldwell, foot specialist Robert Mills, radiologist Michael Thorpe, HealthSouth Doctors Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital. The lawsuit revolves around a left big toe injury suffered in November 1999, that eventually ended McDuffie's career.

The Miami Herald reports in the week since Miami Dolphins running backs coach Joel Collier was reassigned from offensive coordinator by Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt because of health concerns, multiple sources have said Collier and quarterbacks coach/assistant head coach Marc Trestman didn't see eye to eye. Wannstedt has strongly denied that a rift between both sides had anything to do with his decision. "I've already emphatically said that the adjustment was made only because of Joel's health situation," Wannstedt said. "Now that it has been made, we're moving forward and concentrating on what we need to do to get ready for this season."

The Sun-Sentinel reports Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga placed more blame on Dolphins PK Olindo Mare than head coach Dave Wannstedt for the Dolphins not making the playoffs last season. "I think a lot of our problems last year were receivers and the offensive line," said Huizenga. "If we would have given him a little more help, I think we would have had a better year. But there again, I go back to if we made two field goals and had two more wins, we'd be in the playoffs." Huizenga never mentioned Mare by name, but it was obvious he was referring to Mare's two missed field goals on Oct. 19, in a 19-13 overtime loss to the New England Patriots.

ESPN reported Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga is comtemplating offering compensation to the Redskins to inherit the remainder of Spurrier's current contract. However, a Dolphins spokesman said there have been no discussions to replace head coach Dave Wannstedt. Spurrier, also linked to several college openings, has continued to assert his plan to return to the Redskins next season.
