The Green Bay Packers are committed to rebuilding its defense in a way that best suits the philosophy of defensive coordinator Dom Capers, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. That means getting more athletics and versatile along the defensive line. That might be bad news for DT B.J. Raji, who turned down $8 million to stay with the team last season. The team wants linemen that better resemble DT Datone Jones. Raji and DT Ryan Pickett, who are 330 pounds, might no longer fit what the club wants to do.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy indicated defensive coordinator Dom Capers likely will return to the team next season. "I'm not going into this thing looking to make big changes, but I'll tell you one thing. When I go through this process, there's things you really like about your program. ... The Green Bay Packers are putting more time into preparing for the read-option in 2013. "We're going to do more," defensive coordinator Dom Capers said. "We're going to do more than we have because we know the first two teams we play run it. There will be a number of teams that have a little element of it in. How much it takes off, I don't know. It's like everything else. Things go in cycles. Over 28 years, I've seen a lot of cycles in the league."

Green Bay Packers LB Desmond Bishop feels defensive coordinator Dom Capers should return in 2013. "Absolutely. Coach Capers is a great coach. You can't have a great defense and win the Super Bowl one year and then be kicked out the next year, or a year or two later," Bishop said.

The Green Bay Packers' defense sent five or more rushers 46.3 percent of the time last season, primarily because defensive coordinator Dom Capers felt his three- and four-man rushes weren't disruptive enough. Capers, however, wants to blitz less this season if possible. "I think the goal of every defense is to get pressure out of a four-man rush," Capers said. "That varies from week to week based on the kind of quarterback you're seeing (and) how fast they get the ball out of their hands. We certainly would like to overall improve our pass rush."

Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers said the biggest learning curve for LB Nick Perry will be understanding how to drop back and play in coverage. "I don't think the power part and the physical part will be any problem for him," Capers said. "His greatest learning will probably come in coverage and what we ask him to do there."
