Tannenbaum refused to write off his career just yet. "I could never say that," Tannenbaum said. "This is a guy that was successful in high school, won championships in college. Former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum acknowledged Thursday, Feb. 14, during a television interview that signing QB Mark Sanchez to a five-year, $58.25 million deal may have been a mistake considering Sanchez's lack of progress. "I don't think I would have signed a quarterback to an extension knowing that he'd have 26 turnovers," Tannenbaum said. "That might be one of the reasons I'm right sitting here with you guys. Not that this is not a great place to spend Valentine's Day." Tannenbaum still thinks Sanchez can turn his game around. "But if we're sitting here a year or two from now, I still think Mark's going to be a good, credible quarterback in the NFL."

Obviously, based on this year, it hasn't worked out that way yet. But I think Mark's career is far from over." Sanchez received a three-year extension, including an $8.25 million guarantee for 2013.

We get our doors blown out in New England and lose, 45-3, and what does he say at the podium in Foxborough? 'If we played tomorrow, we'd beat them.' Everyone's looking at him like he's crazy - a lot of us. What happens? We go up there six weeks later (in the playoffs), and we beat them. That's all because of his innate leadership and optimism. We're in a sport that deals with adversity, but this brings out the best in Rex."

I've seen it - in the weight room, putting in extra time with the coaches early in the morning, after practice when everybody is gone. He's putting in time, so he's not lazy."
