Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said everyone is playing and coaching for their jobs beyond 2013, despite team owner/general manager Jerry Jones recently saying Garrett was not coaching for his job this year.
"Ever since I have been in this league as a player, as a coach, I think everybody, each and every day, is playing and coaching for their jobs," Garrett said. "That's the nature of this thing and that's what makes the NFL great. You come here to work every day. And we use the word urgency a lot ... And every day is important, as a coach, as a player we are trying to get ourselves better each and every day to become the team we want to be."

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones overruled head coach Jason Garrett and said C Travis Frederick will start for the team. "I had hoped we could come out of this thing with a legitimate starter, a legitimate starter, and he will start," Jones said of Frederick, who can also play guard. "He will start. First-rounder and not starting? I know coach wants there to be competition and should be, and we all know that's the way it is." Garrett had only said he hoped to create competition at the position.

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said OT Doug Free's future with the team will largely depend on which direction the Cowboys go in the NFL Draft. Free reportedly will have to take a pay cut to return in 2013. "I think it's notable that we haven't said where we are and he hasn't said where he is relative to his status as we go into this draft," Jones said. "That's by design and certainly we wanted to see how and what we do in the draft ... If you draft a tackle, how does that impact a player like Doug, whether or not you move him around? I'm sure he's looking at it there as well."

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones praised RB Lance Dunbar at the NFL meetings. "Dunbar is pretty impressive when you look back (on his season)," Jerry Jones said. "When he got his chances, he did real well. He was in some pretty critical situations. He's got a real receiver knack. He can find the soft spot. He gives us an alternative. He's going to have to make the contribution on special teams. It's hard not to have that third back be a special teams contributor."

The Dallas Cowboys are open to bringing back unrestricted free agent RB Felix Jones to back up RB DeMarco Murray, according to owner/general manager Jerry Jones. "We've got to look at the backup backfield," Jerry Jones said. "You can't dismiss Felix. I don't want to dismiss him from our thinking."

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said he wants the team's offensive coaches to use QB Tony Romo's skill set even more in 2013 so that he is even more of a focal point. The team is reportedly close to signing Romo to an extension. "Stay tuned. He is going to have high expectations," Jones said. "I expect him to be used. We didn't extend Troy Aikman although Troy had won three Super Bowls. We didn't make the financial commitment to Troy not to have Troy be a critical, if not the critical, part of what our team was about and our ability to move the ball. That is going to be the kind of emphasis we have with Romo. He is not going to be paid to be a bus driver."

Dallas Cowboys OT Doug Free might have to compete with OT Jermey Parnell for the starting right tackle job - if he remains on the team at all. The Cowboys may still ask Free to take a paycut, or release him. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones said a decision regarding Free will likely not be made prior to the NFL Draft.

Although there have been no talks yet between the Dallas Cowboys and QB Tony Romo regarding a contract extension, there is no way owner and general manager Jerry Jones makes Romo uncomfortable by playing out the final year of his deal in 2013.
