Jets | Geno Smith gets a vote of confidence

Fri, 20 Dec 2013 23:14:11 -0800

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is second in the NFL with 21 interceptions thrown, but he has the confidence of Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. The play caller noted that while it may not appear as though Smith has improved from afar, the rookie passer certainly has made progress. Mornhinweg gave Smith credit for his intelligence, athleticism, talent and instincts.

Fantasy Tip: It is believed Smith is auditioning for his own job in 2014, although it appears likely he will receive some form of competition. He has a long way to go before becoming a viable weekly fantasy starter, but a full offseason with the first-team offense and an improved cast of weapons could do wonders. Smith will need to make huge strides before he can be drafted in standard formats.

Jets | Mark Sanchez likes new system

Mon, 19 Aug 2013 17:02:51 -0700

New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez likes the team's new offensive system, and is comfortable working with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. "I love the way you can mix up personnel, formations, use some base concepts and run them a million different ways with motions and shifts," Sanchez said. "I love that he gives us a lot of freedom at the line to go over protection and redirect it with [Nick] Mangold. I think the system, in general, just lends itself to quarterbacks trying to get the ball out quick, taking our shots down field and getting wide outs and skill position players in the right places to distort a defense. Then you go make the read, make the throw and make them work for it."

Jets | Moving away from ground-and-pound philosophy?

Tue, 13 Aug 2013 15:33:55 -0700

The New York Jets ran the ball only 16 times and passed it 42 times in their first preseason game. Although head coach Rex Ryan would like more balance than that, he hinted that it's possible the team will look to throw more often in 2013. "Who said you need to be balanced?" offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said. "You score points throwing the ball. Now you're getting into a philosophical situation. Look it, we don't care how we get it done -- running, passing, we don't care who gets the credit. It's whatever it takes to win the next game."

Jets | Can win without an accurate QB?

Fri, 08 Mar 2013 07:15:46 -0800

New York Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said there is not a certain completion percentage benchmark that he'll need his quarterback to reach in order to win in 2013. Mornhinweg added that he has seen quarterbacks have great seasons without great completion percentages. "Some of the great ones have really not thrown for such great accuracy," Mornhinweg said. "Steve Young was astronomical accuracy-wise. Brett Favre wasn't. Brett Favre, I believe won an MVP two different times out of the three times that he won it, throwing 58, 59, 60 percent, somewhere in there. So they all come in different shapes and sizes." QB Mark Sanchez completed just 54.3 percent of his passes last season, ranking 30th of 32 qualifying quarterbacks.

"There was one particular play in the Pittsburgh game in which he got sacked and he was well protected. He moved himself right into a sack. He can get better there and he has gotten better over the past couple of years there. He certainly can get better there. I do believe that if it was a regular season game, and these are excuses even though everything we do is important and we make no excuses, that he would have done that a little bit differently."
