Redskins | Looking for a franchise quarterback

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said he currently does not have a franchise quarterback on his roster and hopes to acquire one through the NFL Draft. When asked if he was keying in on a quarterback at the Senior Bowl considering his roster, Shanahan replied, "I think everyone wants a franchise quarterback. If you don't have a franchise quarterback and you say you're not looking for one, then you usually won't be working for very long. Everybody wants that guy. People that usually do have that guy are consistently winning."

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris agreed Wednesday, Jan. 11, to join the staff of the Washington Redskins. He will serve as the defensive backs coach. Head coach Mike Shanahan said he will allow Morris to void his contract if he is able to secure a defensive coordinator position next year.

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan admitted Monday, Dec. 26, the rebuilding project he took on was a more difficult task than he expected. "A lot longer than I first anticipated," Shanahan said. "We had less depth than I thought. We were a little bit older at a few different positions. I thought we might keep those players a little longer than we did." The Redskins have lost at least 10 games for the second consecutive season.

Washington Redskins TE Chris Cooley (knee) said he is concerned that media were informed he had fluid drained from his surgically-repaired left knee earlier in the week. Head coach Mike Shanahan told reporters Thursday, Oct. 13, about the procedure. Cooley wishes the news had not been publicized "because everyone thinks it's drained, that's a huge deal," Cooley said. "No, that's not a big deal. Guys get things drained all the time." Cooley expects to play in Week 6.

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan had a discussion with RB Tim Hightower (shoulder) about the way he handled disclosure of his shoulder injury.

Hightower actually injured his shoulder in Week 1, but hid it due to playing time concerns. He aggravated the injury in Week 3. "I talked to him on the side and said, 'You've got to be a little bit more honest with me. If you're hurting, I need to know you're hurt,'" Shanahan said. "He didn't want to admit it. I think that shoulder is a lot better than it was, but looking back at it, I think he's a little more sore than he let on to."
