Dolphins | Still might use franchise tag

Sun, 03 Mar 2013 20:15:55 -0800

The Miami Dolphins have until Monday, March 4, to use the franchise tag, and general manager Jeff Ireland said Sunday, March 3, that it was a "likelihood." However, doing so might result in the team overpaying for a player. Since getting hired in 2008, the GM used the tag just once, on DT Paul Soliai, in 2011.

Dolphins | No decision on Reggie Bush

Thu, 21 Feb 2013 12:14:58 -0800

While there has been no decision on RB Reggie Bush's status, Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said the team would love to have a player of his skillset on the roster. "Certainly would, you'd love to have his skillset on the football team, Reggie has a unique set of skill sets, he's been a receiver, a primaryrunning back, I definitely see a role for that type of skill set," Ireland said. "We'll just have to see how things go, we've got a few more days of talking to our own guys and we'll see how things go."

Dolphins | No rush to sign free-agents

Thu, 21 Feb 2013 12:07:58 -0800

Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said the team is not in a rush to sign their own free agents, and the only date Ireland has in mind to finish signing his players is March 9th. "We're going through a process," Ireland said. "I don't think we had to get them done at the first of January. There's no date. Right now the date that I have in my head is March 9th, to get those guys done before they get into that period. So we've taken on the evaluation of our coaching staff, we've been very thorough in that process, finding out what fits. When you have as many of them as we do you can't just make knee-jerk reactions on getting certain guys signed so we've taken a very thorough evaluation and we've met on it many times and this is the time period we're starting to talk to them and try to get some things done."

Dolphins | Praise Ryan Tannehill

Thu, 21 Feb 2013 11:56:39 -0800

Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland praised QB Ryan Tannehill on the first day of the NFL Draft Combine. "As I've said before, Ryan's got 35, 36 games under his belt as a starting quarterback combined from a college and pro career," Ireland said. "And you'd normally like to have 35 games under your belt as a graduating senior so I still think there's a bunch of upside left in Ryan's potential. I like what I see so far. I love his intangible makeup. I love his athletic skill set. We have a long way to go. He knows that. But he can get a lot better. I'm very confident in that."

"He's got (36) starts under his belt to this day, and that's huge," Ireland said. "I think we're better for it, I think Ryan is better for it. Dolphins | Violated principles in drafting Ryan Tannehill

Mon, 04 Feb 2013 16:14:08 -0800

Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said the team violated their principles in drafting QB Ryan Tannehill as high as they did. "I think the axiom that you go by in scouting is you like to see a quarterback with 30 starts under his belt before he's ready to play, and we kind of violated that, our principle," Ireland said.
