Chargers | Chargers leaning towards RB committee

Fri, 27 May 2016 11:38:39 -0700

San Diego Chargers RBs Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver will each be "used to their strengths" in the upcoming season in helping comprise a committee, according to running backs coach Ollie Wilson. "Those guys can do a lot of different things and they have all bought in to working together and having their own role instead of being (angry) not getting all the touches," he said. "They understand we don't have just one starter here. They are all part of our scheme and system."

Fantasy Tip: As proven last year, the Chargers can make this work for all involved. Woodhead, for instance, is as good as anyone in catching passes out of the backfield, and is capable of running all sorts of routes. He's also serviceable in goal-line situations, which arguably makes him the most valuable of all Chargers running backs. Gordon probably has the highest ceiling and will still see a lot of work, though this may hinder his overall outlook, considering the hype he had as a rookie last year. Oliver, meanwhile, should also see some usage in both rush attempts and receiving targets.

Chargers | San Diego to use all RBs

Fri, 13 May 2016 12:46:07 -0700

San Diego Chargers RBs Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver will all receive playing time in 2016, according to offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. Whisenhunt said there will be times that two of the running backs will be on the field at the same time. The team will have packages for each running back so they can put them in positions where they will succeed.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon probably will receive most of the carries in 2016 if he is able to stay healthy. Gordon rushed for only 641 yards and zero touchdowns in 2015 but is coming off microfracture surgery, which makes him a risky No. 2 or No. 3 back for owners. Woodhead will be involved in the running and passing game and will be valuable in all fantasy leagues. Oliver should see playing time in each game but will not be a strong option.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead leads RBs in receiving

Mon, 04 Jan 2016 14:54:49 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead led all running backs in targets (107), receptions (81), receiving yards (756) and receiving touchdowns (6) this season.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead finished as a top-five fantasy running back in PPR leagues this season after only playing in three games last year. A slew of Chargers injuries helped increase his utilization, but he also finished as a PPR RB1 two years ago, too, so this wasn't a fluke. He should be viewed as a low-end RB1 to high-end RB2 in PPR leagues next season.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead totals 13 touches

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 22:17:41 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead rushed five times for 11 yards in the Week 17 game against the Denver Broncos, and he added eight receptions for 51 yards on 10 targets.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead was very useful to Philip Rivers, especially down the stretch, with a banged up offensive line. He was a great safety valve, and outstanding fantasy option to those in points per reception (PPR) leagues. If he is back with the Chargers in 2016, he'll be the backup to Melvin Gordon, and a decent PPR option again.

Chargers | Six touches for Danny Woodhead

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 21:05:47 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead ran three times for five yards in the Week 14 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, and he added three grabs for eight yards on six targets.

Fantasy Tip: The Chargers have moved away from Woodhead, trying to pound the ball more with rookie Melvin Gordon in recent weeks. The offensive line cannot block for Gordon, so the Chargers might be better off using the scatback Woodhead more. However, Gordon is the future, Woodhead is not.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead has seven touches

Sun, 22 Nov 2015 18:55:17 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead ran six times for just seven yards in the Week 11 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Woodhead also added one reception for nine yards.

Fantasy Tip: The Chargers have a versatile back out of the backfield, but for whatever reason they choose not to use Woodhead even with a banged up wide receiver corps. They continue to try and establish the run with Gordon, and even Woodhead up the middle, but the offensive line is banged up and it is just not possible. It can be maddening for Woodhead's fantasy owners, as he can do things and is just not used properly.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead leads in TD catches

Thu, 12 Nov 2015 10:44:57 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead leads all running backs in the NFL in receiving touchdowns this year after he finished second to Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles in 2013.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead has three touchdown catches, including one that game last Monday night in Week 9. He's a favorite of Philip Rivers' and is favored over rookie Melvin Gordon in the red zone, too. With even more injuries to San Diego's wideouts, Woodhead's role as a pass-catching running back will expand even more. He's one of the safest flex plays in PPR leagues you can find.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead could break record

Tue, 10 Nov 2015 16:35:30 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead is on pace for 926 receiving yards in 2015, which would set the single-season record for receiving yards by a San Diego running back.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead has been one of the most consistent running backs in PPR leagues this year. He is an every-week starter in such scoring formats. Don't play him this week, though, as the Chargers have their bye.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead piles up yards

Mon, 09 Nov 2015 21:18:50 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead ran six times for 33 yards in the Week 9 game against the Chicago Bears Monday, Nov. 9, and he added six receptions for a team-high 78 yards and a touchdown. He was targeted 10 times.

Fantasy Tip: The Chargers have injury problems at wide receiver, and Woodhead is basically like a slot receiver who is shifty and can do plenty of good things for FantasyScore players and those in PPR fantasy formats.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead scores twice

Sun, 25 Oct 2015 19:34:49 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead ran five times for 26 yards in the Week 7 game against the Oakland Raiders, and he added 11 receptions for 75 yards and a pair of scores.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) was expected to take a backseat to highly-touted rookie Melvin Gordon ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) this season, but it is Woodhead has been clearly the better FantasyScore option week in and week out.
