Chargers | Ryan Mathews remains lead back

Thu, 20 Mar 2014 11:19:12 -0700

San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said that RB Ryan Mathews remains the team's every-down back despite the signing of RB Donald Brown in free agency. "We know Ryan is our bell cow," Telesco said. "He's our No. 1 back. He had an excellent year last year. And we all know what Danny Woodhead can do in his role. We saw that for 16 games last year. And we think Donald can come in and add to that, too, and give us some different options. And a different style, too. The more weapons we can have for Philip Rivers, the better."

Fantasy Tip: Mathews figures to be a nice RB2/3 again this year, even with Woodhead and Brown around to steal touches from him in the backfield. Mathews loses some luster in PPR leagues, however, because of the presence of the other two backs for passing situations.

Chargers | Split carries for running backs may happen again

Sat, 11 Jan 2014 00:25:28 -0800

Should San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) be unable to play Sunday, Jan. 12, against the Denver Broncos, RB Ronnie Brown and RB Danny Woodhead would likely split carries once again, much as they did last week when Mathews left the game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews' status in question?

Thu, 09 Jan 2014 14:06:12 -0800

San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt said RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) "will go if he can go" against the Denver Broncos in the divisional round this weekend. RBs Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown would pick up the slack if Mathews can't play.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews misses practice

Wed, 27 Nov 2013 14:49:56 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) missed practice Wednesday, Nov. 27, after aggravating his hamstring ailment in Week 12. Head coach Mike McCoy said Mathews still has a chance to play in Week 13 versus the Cincinnati Bengals, though.

Fantasy Tip: Don't hold out hope for Mathews. Have a backup plan in place. Even if he does play, Danny Woodhead may get the bulk of the workload. Woodhead becomes virtually a must-start, especially in point-per-reception leagues, if Mathews is inactive.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews not practicing

Thu, 10 Oct 2013 11:22:29 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (concussion) is not participating in practice Thursday, Oct. 10. He has not been cleared to return to the practice field.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews has been known as a slow healer, so it would not be a shock to see him sit out this weekend against the Indianapolis Colts. Danny Woodhead's matchup isn't great, but without Mathews around, it'd be hard not to find room for him in your lineup. Woodhead has much greater appeal in point-per-reception leagues.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews probable

Fri, 04 Oct 2013 13:23:55 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) was limited in practice Friday, Oct. 4, but is probable for Week 5. It's the first time he's been on the injury report this week, and head coach Mike McCoy hinted the team was just being cautious in limiting him in practice.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews shouldn't be in any danger of missing the Week 5 game against the Oakland Raiders. The matchup is nice, but he's still more of an RB3 or flex guy. Danny Woodhead carries more value than Mathews in point-per-reception setups.

Chargers | Trusting Ryan Mathews

Mon, 16 Sep 2013 16:14:53 -0700

The San Diego Chargers have trusted RB Ryan Mathews despite a fumble inside the red zone in the team's Week 2 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Mathews has now fumbled eight times in his career and three times inside the red zone. Despite his fumble last weekend, Mathews played in the second half, although RBs Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown split carries. Mathews was absent for the team's hurry-up drive because of his inability to prove he can hang onto the football. "You're going to play, you're going to make a mistake," head coach Mike McCoy said of his words to Mathews. "You just keep going, don't worry about the last play. Philip (Rivers) has made a mistake, there's going to be a bad call, I'll make a poor decision somewhere. You do something, keep going. The future is now, just keep playing." Mathews carried the ball 16 times for 73 yards against the Eagles.

Fantasy Tip: It's great news for Mathews owners that the new coaching staff has more patience for his ball-security issues. However, if this keeps up, Woodhead and Brown will surely see more carries. Woodhead has more upside and should be owned in most leagues, especially if it's a point-per-reception setup.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead playing WR

Tue, 03 Sep 2013 12:19:53 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead is being used as a slot receiver and caught two passes in his preseason debut against the Arizona Cardinals. WR Eddie Royal (lung, concussion) has been sidelined in the preseason with a bruised lung and concussion. WRs Vincent Brown and Malcom Floyd are expected to be the starting wide receivers in Week 1. Woodhead may join the offense in third-down situations, and WR Keenan Allen should mostly work out of the slot.

Sat, 24 Aug 2013 09:35:15 -0700

The San Diego Chargers are expected to use RB Danny Woodhead like they did RB Darren Sproles when he was a member of the Chargers. Woodhead is expected to be used on third downs and in the two-minute offense. He could also be used as a slot receiver at times during games.
