Although there are reports that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have hired Butch Davis as a defensive assistant, that is not yet a done deal. Davis' role with the team has yet to be determined. He could serve an advisory role only with Tampa Bay due to his contract with the University North Carolina, Davis' former team. Buried in Davis' contract with UNC – which fired him in July – is an agreement that Davis will get up to $1.7 million in severance payments from 2013 to 2015. The payments, however, would be made only in the event Davis was not employed as a coach elsewhere. If Davis was to take a job coaching elsewhere, the amount of his new coaching salary would be deducted from the payments owed by the university. As a result, Davis has yet to sign a deal with the Buccaneers, according to two sources.

A source said Butch Davis has the job if he wants it, but the school "would like a commitment soon, in two to three weeks from Butch." The school fired sixth-year head coach John Bunting, effective at the end of the 2006 season. Davis has started to assemble a coaching staff from the ranks of NFL and major college programs should he accept the job from North Carolina.

"Butch is the coach for the rest of the season -- as we've always discussed," team president John Collins said. "Going forward, we're interested in building a more substantive football operation, and we're open -- as Butch and [owner Randy Lerner] have discussed -- to bringing in anyone to help the team win." Discussions about adding a general manager or director of football operation will not take place until the 2004 season ends, Collins said.

In a recent interview with Jaguars.com, Jacksonville Jaguars WR Kevin Johnson finally responded to criticism made by Cleveland Browns head coach Butch Davis, after Davis promptly cut Johnson in early November. "If they (Cleveland) wanted to go in a different direction, that's fine. I can handle that and move on. But don't question my character as a man," Johnson said. "I think anyone who knows me as a person and knows what type of guy I am knows that I have never been in any type of trouble on or off the field. I've done everything I've needed to do as a person and as a man. When they questioned my character, that really bothered me. A lot of people read that stuff in the paper and automatically think I'm a bad guy, and it's just not true."
