Panthers | Steve Smith said he was targeted by New Orleans

Wed, 25 Apr 2012 06:44:18 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith said that New Orleans Saints players were encouraged to go after him. "I actually had an altercation with a guy who told me firsthand," Smith said, although he didn't name the player. "I was going out of bounds, and the guy went for my ankle. I said, 'Hey, man, cut that out.' He's like, 'Well, we get fined if we don't go after your legs when you go out of bounds.' … And actually this past year, this last game when we played them, I had a little conversation with Gregg Williams … He took responsibility, he was saying it wasn't right, but that's who he was."

NFL | NFLPA had Gregg Williams tapes early

Mon, 16 Apr 2012 04:55:26 -0700

The NFL Players Association had detailed knowledge of the video and audio tapes in which former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams implored his team to target San Francisco 49ers players for injury before the tapes became public April 4, according to sources. Cleveland Browns LB Scott Fujita, a former Saints linebacker and a member of the union's executive committee, provided the NFLPA with the details of Williams' speech and the tape that independent film-maker Sean Pamphilon had made accessible to him, according to sources. Fujita is among the players who face disciplinary action from commissioner Roger Goodell for participation in a "pay for performance" pool that also served as a bounty program aimed at targeting opposing players for injury, which the league said was administered by Williams.

Rams | Have no defensive coordinator

Tue, 10 Apr 2012 12:43:00 -0700

The St. Louis Rams announced their full coaching staff without suspended defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, and the team has elected not to replace their defensive coordinator. However, this could change before the start of the season. "I've got Dave McGinnis on staff, Chuck Cecil on staff," head coach Jeff Fisher said. "I'll remind you that the playbook that Gregg has originated in my office, so I have a pretty good feel for the defense. At this point, I don't have liberty to say who is going to make the calls and the decisions, but it'll get done and it'll get done effectively."

Bills | Gregg Williams was soft as head coach

Mon, 09 Apr 2012 05:49:39 -0700

Former NFL DL Chidi Ahanotu said former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was much different as head coach of the Buffalo Bills. Ahanotu said Williams was softer. "He was the softest coach I've been around," Ahanotu said. "It was to the point, really, where I said, 'Man, this guy's really not made out to be a coach.' Honestly, that's what I always felt in Buffalo - this is not football. His approach was very cerebral."

NFL | Players always aware of injuries to opponents

Sat, 07 Apr 2012 06:38:32 -0700

Former NFL LB Antonio Pierce said former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' speech, in which he told players to target injured opponents, is nothing new. "I've heard that speech from seven of the defensive coordinators I've played with in my nine-year career," Pierce said. "Think about it, if a guy knows he's going to get hit hard, he's not going to come across that middle." Pierce, who played under Williams with the Washington Redskins in 2004, called the coach's choice of words "a little harsh, they're a little tough," but talked about the awareness of an opponent's injured players. "Throughout the week we always knew who was injured and what body part was injured," Pierce said. "If he's not in the game, our chances of winning are higher. And that's what it's all about. It's all about winning."

Saints | Filmmaker defends releasing Gregg Williams audio

Sat, 07 Apr 2012 05:00:29 -0700

Documentary filmmaker Sean Pamphilon is refuting a claim by retired NFL player Steve Gleason that he released a recording of then-New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams without legal permission. Pamphilon said he did not violate a contractual agreement between he and Gleason. "It is true that from the beginning Steve and his wife (Michel) were opposed to releasing this footage and I felt strongly that the public had a right to hear this material and judge for themselves," Pamphilon said in a statement. "To this end, we agreed upon a third party, a person of high character who both Steve and I trust implicitly, to mediate and advise us on the final decision. When I received a call from this person saying to release the audio 'the sooner the better,' I did just that. ..."
