Harvey Fialkov, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins WR Derrius Thompson didn't seem to lock up a roster spot despite his five catches for 98 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown during the team's preseason game Thursday, Sept. 1. "He certainly played and made some good plays in the game. He also went down in the game, so how's that elevator go up and down, huh?" head coach Nick Saban said. "He pulled up and came out of the game, a slight strain of his (hamstring), I guess." A frustrated Thompson felt he was auditioning for the league.

Michael Russo, of the Miami Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins WR Derrius Thompson has emerged as a go-to guy in the three weeks since Jim Bates became the interim head coach. Thompson has caught as many passes (9) as he had in nine games under former coach Dave Wannstedt. "To me, it's not a surprise, because I've done these things [before]," Thompson said. "I just needed a chance again because I know what I'm capable of doing when given the opportunity." Thompson is currently the third wide out behind WRs Chris Chambers and Marty Booker.

We also have a lot of young guys we're looking at. The Sun-Sentinel reports Miami Dolphins WR Derrius Thompson hopes to stick with the Dolphins again in 2004 despite a poor season. He signed a three-year, $3.6 million deal last year but could be released in the off-season. Thompson is scheduled to collect a $400,000 roster bonus and has an $850,000 base salary in 2004, but managed just 26 receptions for 359 yards and no touchdowns in 12 starts in 2003. Thompson said he definitely would like to return, but noted that it isn't in his control.

Miami Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt said starting WR Derrius Thompson and backup WR Kendall Newson would split snaps for a second consecutive game Sunday, Nov. 16, against the Baltimore Ravens. Dolphins coaches are so disappointed in Thompson's output (14 catches) than Newson saw significant playing time last week against the Tennessee Titans, even though he wasn't promoted from the developmental squad until two days before kickoff.
