Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports New York Jets WR Kevin Lockett will likely be activated in Week 15 for the first time in his five games as a member of the Jets. There is no guarantee Lockett will see playing time, however, since the team has WRs Curtis Conway, Santana Moss, and Kevin Swayne available and the team rarely utilizes a four-wide receiver set.

He can't get into uniform on game days because behind starting WRs Santana Moss and Curtis Conway, Jonathan Carter has been playing increasingly more and Kevin Swayne is holding onto the fourth WR spot.

Jets | Lockett Practices, Not Expected To Play Against Colts

Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports New York Jets WR Kevin Lockett practiced with the scout team Thursday, Nov. 13. Lockett is not expected to play Sunday, Nov. 16, at the Indianapolis Colts, but with five of his seven seasons spent in the West Coast offenses, he should be able to get up to speed quickly for the Week 12 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Lockett is expected to work in the slot role that WR Wayne Chrebet filled until he began having migraine and concussion problems.

Updating previous reports, Bart Hubbuch, of the Florida Times-Union, reports Jacksonville Jaguars WR J.J. Stokes is leading the battle to be the team's No. 2 receiver opposite WR Jimmy Smith. Head coach Jack Del Rio said Stokes "is beginning to separate himself a little bit" from competitors WRs Donald Hayes, Matthew Hatchette, and Kevin Lockett. "There are some things that J.J. is doing more consistently than some of the other guys. If I had to pick a guy right now, J.J. is who I'd pick."

Updating an earlier story, John Clayton reports for ESPN.com the Jacksonville Jaguars reached an agreement with free agent WR Kevin Lockett (Jaguars). He will sign a one-year deal at $555,000, which includes a $25,000 signing bonus to remain with the team. Because he signed at the minimum, his salary will count only $475,000 against the Jaguars cap.

Vito Stellino reports for the Florida Times-Union free agent Kevin Lockett (Jaguars) is close to a one-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Lockett's agent, Jim Steiner, said the deal should be finalized in a day or two. Lockett will get the $530,000 minimum with a small signing bonus.

Current starters Rod Gardner and Derrius Thompson will face competition from WRs Kevin Lockett and Chris Doering. "Our starters were not real bad, but they weren't real great the last game," Spurrier said. "They weren't terrible. But we need to do something. They need to run good routes. We're not doing that. We're not doing that at all. We don't have real starters right now." "Lockett has been running very good routes," Spurrier said. "He hustles. He blocks downfield. We've got to play him more."

Redskins.com reports Washington Redskins WR Kevin Lockett is busy trying to learn the Redskins new offensive scheme this year. He said it'll take more work on his part to get up to speed with the other WRs on roster, many of whom have played under head coach Steve Spurrier at Florida. Lockett said he believes this offensive style suits him better than any he played in before, noting it'll give him a chance to use his quickness and route-running ability to get open and catch more passes.

Redskins.com's Jason Gould reports coach Steve Spurrier praised the play of QB Sage Rosenfels during the team's second day of a three-day mini-camp, Wednesday. "Sage has a chance to be a very good quarterback," Spurrier said. "I really think he's got a chance. He just has to play a lot. Obviously, he has to make a few mistakes and try not to repeat them. Sage could very easily be our starter during the first exhibition game--could be. We'll see how it plays out." He also said his Florida WRs are playing well and so are WRs Derrius Thompson, Darnerien McCants, Kevin Lockett and Justin Skaggs.

By the way, the release of Bates saved the team about $750,000 against the salary cap, with $50,000 remaining as a prorated bonus.

Updating an earlier story, the Washington Post reports the Washington Redskins potential release of KR Michael Bates, WR Kevin Lockett and CB Donovan Greer, would be totally salary cap related. The team would save about $750,000 in cap space by releasing Bates, $1 million by releasing Lockett and about $640,000 by releasing Greer. Bates and Lockett were made available in the expansion draft and not selected.

The Washington Times reports the Washington Redskins are about $3 million under the 2002 salary cap, which will limit their activity in the free agent market. Because of that, the team is likely to be knocked out of the race for QB Drew Bledsoe and be forced to release more players to open additional salary cap room. Washington Redskins head coach Marty Schottenheimer said OL Matt Campbell (knee) might miss a couple weeks of action with a knee injury. RB/KR Michael Bates suffered a hip flexor and is day-to-day. WR Kevin Lockett (ribs) was kind of sore on Monday after suffering a rib cartilage injury, but Lockett told Schottenheimer that he should be able to play this weekend. DE Bruce Smith (knee/head) should be okay after suffering some soreness in his knee and getting his bell rung on Sunday.

Rick Snider reports for the Washington Times after three games, the Washington Redskins punt return team has negative yardage. The best return of this season is three yards; the other two returns lost two yards. There were also two fair catches while four other punts landed untouched. The team has been using Michael Bates and Kevin Lockett to return punts. The Redskins may now use Bates for punts near midfield when his quickness could get him into the end zone, but Lockett will handle those in Washington territory.

According to the Washington Post, Washington Redskins WR Michael Westbrook (bruised hip) practiced yesterday, and coach Marty Schottenheimer said he expects him to start Sunday. As previously reported, RB Stephen Davis also practiced and he too should start on Sunday. Schottenheimer said he also expects FB Donnell Bennett (sprained toe) and KR Michael Bates (bruised heel) to be ready. Bates and WR Kevin Lockett likely will continue to split the punt return duties.
