Bears | Team gives Gardner a workout

Wed, 06 Sep 2006 05:27:29 -0700

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports the Chicago Bears worked out free agent WR Rod Gardner (Packers) Tuesday, Sept. 5. General manager Jerry Angelo and head coach Lovie Smith took a look at what's out there that might help a roster that has not been able to achieve any consistency at wide receiver since training camp opened. Gardner could be the man the Bears choose, and they also could have pumped him for information on the new offense head coach Mike McCarthy has installed as they prepare for the season opener Sunday, Sept. 10, at Lambeau Field. If the Bears sign Gardner before Sunday, his contract would be guaranteed for the season. In a lot of cases, clubs will wait to sign veterans until after the first game so they are not on the hook for termination pay, and one league source indicated that could be what is happening here.

Packers | Team looking for a No. 2 WR

Fri, 21 Jul 2006 05:54:19 -0700

Jason Wilde, of the Wisconsin State Journal, reports the Green Bay Packers know WR Donald Driver will be their No. 1 wide receiver. A big question mark entering training camp is who will be the No. 2 wide receiver? It is one of those positions where there are a group of candidates for a starting job only because, well, somebody has to start. Of course, there's also the possibility no one will stand out and somebody will have to start by default. "I hope not. I hope someone jumps up," said head coach Mike McCarthy, who'll open his first training camp a week from today. "The thing about that group, there's going to be a lot of competition there. It's going to be a good group." After Driver, a pair of 2001 draft disappointments, WRs Robert Ferguson and Rod Gardner are the leading candidates to start on the other side. Ferguson has played in all 16 games only once in five years. The coaches were quite taken with rookie second-round pick WR Greg Jennings, who played at Western Michigan after being snubbed by Michigan. He impressed the staff with his route-running and quickness in and out of breaks. Fourth-round pick WR Corey Rodgers is more likely to contribute on special teams. WRs Ruvell Martin, Vince Butler and Chad Lucas lead a crew of youngsters vying for the final roster spot if the team keeps six wide receivers.

"Rod flashes and he makes some plays," Jagodzinski said. "I go, 'God, who's that guy?'" Gardner was present for workouts Thursday and Friday, June 15 and 16, saying he missed workouts earlier in the week because he had to take care of his son. Packers | Gardner looking to prove himself

Sun, 21 May 2006 15:03:08 -0700

"Not based off last year, at all," Gardner said. "So hopefully things work out early in the season and we commit to something long-term." Gardner hopes to prove himself to the Packers early this season, and then get to work on a deal that keeps him with the team. He considers himself a good complement to No. 1 WR Donald Driver. "I love going deep," Gardner said. "Give me the ball. You can leave the little quick stuff, slants and all that across the middle; you can leave that to (Driver). He loves being inside like that. But me, leave me on that sideline. I'm good." Head coach Mike McCarthy said Gardner looked ready to go Saturday, May 20, after missing Friday's practices, May 19.
