Jerry McDonald, of InsideBayArea.com, reports Oakland Raiders TE Zeron Flemister is battling for a roster spot as the team's third tight end. He is primarily a blocker on a team that has plenty of wide receivers to catch passes. He excels as a blocker, although he's reluctant to affix that label to his jersey. "I am here to do whatever they need me to do," Flemister said. "If that requires blocking, if that requires me to catch passes, or play special teams, that's what I'm here for." Flemister, TE Rickey Dudley and TE John Paul Foschi battle for what is essentially one spot. "We've got good competition," head coach Norv Turner said. "I think, based on a game or a half, some people start jumping to conclusions, but I think that is one of our most competitive positions."

"I believe that Robert Royal could start," Spurrier said. "I haven't gone over exactly who our starters will be yet. But he's been running with the first group, so he most likely will be the starter. He's just caught the ball a little better, blocked consistently, just played a little bit better. It's pretty close, but he played a little bit better than Zeron."
