If you remember last year, there were numbers of games where we didn't have a third running back up, and from time to time, that'll happen when we need maybe another tight end up or need another rush guy."

"It's going to have to be a week-to-week decision," special teams coordinator Brian Murphy said. "Obviously, his situation isn't one that you can predict. That's the reason why we're trying to rep as many people as we can - to have alternatives." RB Darius Reynaud is the clear favorite for a role returning punts and could also factor in on kickoffs. RB Albert Young could also be used on kickoffs. CBs Asher Allen and Marcus Sherels have also been tried on punt returns, but Allen hasn't performed well and Sherels is a long shot to make the team.

Gerhart wasn't sure what type of role he will play for the Vikings. "He surely has the ability to step up in front of a linebacker and be able to (pass) protect just like Chester (Taylor) and really Albert," head coach Brad Childress said. Vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman said the team selected him to play tailback and not simply to work as a battering ram in front of Peterson. "I always felt and believed that you have to have two backs in this league," Spielman said.
