The Associated Press reports former NFL QB Danny Wuerffel has retired from the NFL. Wuerffel spent six seasons as a backup quarterback with the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers and the Washington Redskins. Wuerffel said at a news conference Wednesday, Feb. 18, he is taking a job as associate athletic director of Desire Street Ministries, which works with inner city youth in New Orleans. In six seasons, Wuerffel completed 184 of 350 passes, with 12 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.

Updating previous reports, Nunyo Demasio, of the Washington Post, reports free agent QB Danny Wuerffel turned down an offer from the Washington Redskins to be the team's No. 2 quarterback. According to a person close to Wuerffel, the quarterback didn't think it was worth returning, especially because of the way he was released earlier this year. The deal would have been worth about $300,000 for the remaining nine games of the season. The Redskins now seem content to stick with rookie QB Gibran Hamdan and the recently-acquired QB Tim Hasselbeck.

The Associated Press reports in a surprising move that relied on Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder's tie-breaking vote, the Redskins cut QBs Danny Wuerffel and Gibran Hamdan on Saturday, Aug. 30. The cuts mean Redskins head coach Steve Spurrier will start the season with just QBs Patrick Ramsey and Rob Johnson available at quarterback. "Right now we're planning on dressing out two and hoping and praying that Patrick doesn't get hurt or both of them don't get hurt," Spurrier said.

Jody Foldesy, of the Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins QB Danny Wuerffel may have earned the backup quarterback position ahead of QB Rob Johnson due to his pre-season performances. Wuerffel drew praise from head coach Steve Spurrier after the pre-season finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars. "He had a lot of good plays," Spurrier said. "He had a few he could have thrown a little straighter, I thought, especially the one to Zeron [Flemister]. He just let that one get away from him. He's very capable of throwing the ball a lot better than that one."

Wuerffel admitted that he was pretty rusty. "I threw some good balls early and not-so-good balls later," he said. Redskins head coach Steve Spurrier agreed with Wuerffel's self-assessment. "He looked all right," said Spurrier. "He threw a few that he could've thrown a little sharper. I told him, 'Danny, you need to zip the ball. I'm tired of hearing everyone say you lob it.'"

The team has apparently decided to let Shane Matthews go. Sources close to the situation also said yesterday the team is leaning toward not re-signing Danny Wuerffel. Head coach Steve Spurrier said yesterday he has not ruled out re-signing either of the two, but it appears unlikely that will happen. Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers starter Shaun King could be a possibility for the Redskins once free agency begins.
