San Francisco 49ers K Owen Pochman won a tryout Tuesday, Sept. 16, over free agent K Brett Conway to replace Jeff Chandler as kicker. The 49ers like Pochman's strong leg, as they deemed their difficulty on kickoffs more worrisome than Chandler's inconsistency on field goals.

According to Philip B. Wilson, of the Indianapolis Star, Indianapolis Colts K Mike Vanderjagt is still in competition with K Brett Conway. This comes in response to Conway making the Colts roster of 65 after the first wave of cuts. "Hopefully we'll get to see them a little bit more this week," Colts coach Tony Dungy said. "Brett is kicking well and Mike has kicked well in practice, too." This preseason, Vanderjagt is 0-for-3 and Conway is 1-for-2 on field goal attempts. However, Conway has a deeper kickoff ability. Dungy has said he would like to keep only one kicker on the final roster.

"I knew sooner or later I had to have my breakout game," said Gardner, whose six catches included an 85-yard touchdown to tie the game and a 47-yarder in overtime that set up the winning 23-yard field goal from PK Brett Conway. Gardner said he's a big-play WR and he was only doing his job.

The AP reports the Washington Redskins defeated the Cleveland Browns Friday night 27-25, led by QB Tony Banks. He led three scoring drives, completing 12 of 15 passes for 177 yards and two TDs. Redskins PK Brett Conway's 19-yard FG and DB Lloyd Harrison's 54-yard interception return off Browns QB Kelly Holcomb broke a 17 all tie. The Browns made the final score close with Holcomb's 49-yard pass to Jamel White with 1:17 to play. White ran the PAT in for two points. Banks TDs were 2-yards to FB Donnell Bennett and 4-yards to TE Walter Rasby. Browns TE Ricky Dudley had a 15-yard TD catch and WR Quincy Morgan ran 2 yards for a score for the Browns. Browns QB Tim Couch was 14-of-23 for 163 yards and scrambled for 35 yards. PK Phil Dawson made a 33-yard FG for the Browns, but he also missed from 54 and 48 yards.

Mark Maske reports in the Washington Post the Washington Redskins are about $120,000 under the salary cap with only 48 players under contract. Lately they have been in a sign one player, release another player mode (See: sign PK Brett Conway, don't match the offer for TE/FB Mike Sellers). CB Deion Sanders has not committed to returning for the 2001 season. If he were to be released after June 1, the team would save $2.5 million against the cap. The team lost four unrestricted free agents, QB Brad Johnson; DE N.D. Kalu and WRs James Thrash and Albert Connell. They wanted to re-sign Kalu and Thrash but could not. The team still is looking to fill some holes by re-signing a couple of free agents and through the NFL Draft. DT Dan Wilkinson and S Sam Shade still face potential contract restructures.

According to John Clayton of ESPN, agent Jack Mills flew to San Diego with the hope of getting his client, PK John Carney, a new deal with the San Diego Chargers. The team held a lengthy negotiating session with Carney on Friday. When the Redskins signed Brett Conway, Carney's options narrowed to New Orleans and Atlanta and neither is expected to pay more than $1 million a year for a kicker.

Conway will sign a three-year contract that is believed to be worth up to $2.1 million and the team will announce the signing on Thursday. They might have to release as many as two players to accommodate Conway's contract and the team could opt to not match an offer sheet that restricted free agent FB/TE Mike Sellers signed with the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday. The scheduled meeting with free agent PK John Carney (Chargers) for later today has been canceled.

The Washington Post reports the Redskins search for a new PK took them full circle to a PK they released last season, Brett Conway. As previously reported the team also met with free agent OL Dave Szott (Chiefs) and OL/long snapper Ethan Albright (Bills), earlier today. Conway said he would be open to returning to the Redskins, despite last season's release. The team is leaving open the possibility of pursuing free agent QBs Doug Flutie (Bills) and Trent Dilfer (Ravens) later in free agency, if they remain unsigned. With Flutie drawing interest from a few teams and a reported contract offer from the Chargers, he may not be on the market for long. CB Champ Bailey and DE Marco Coleman helped the salary cap cause by restructuring their contracts earlier.

The Bergen Record's Randy Lange reports agent Jim Steiner confirmed one of the teams he has talked to about trading for his client, WR Jerry Rice, is the New York Jets. The Jets are not alone in their interest. Detroit, Carolina, Oakland, Seattle, and Cleveland are other teams that have reportedly expressed some interest in the veteran WR. Player trades can't be made until March 2, but Steiner said Rice's situation may have to wait until June given the 49ers cap situation. Steiner said the Jets haven't discussed re-signing DE Rick Lyle, soon to be an unrestricted free agent with him. Steiner also said PK John Hall, still under contract, "could be back" with the Jets this off-season. Their other PK, Brett Conway, is not under contract.

The NY Times reports after the re-signing of LBs Bryan Cox and Mo Lewis on Tuesday, New York Jets coach Al Groh said that the remaining unrestricted free agents will probably not be offered contracts before the free-agency signing period in March. They are: DL Jason Ferguson, WR Dedric Ward, DL Rick Lyle, S Chris Hayes and WR/KR Dwight Stone. Lyle's agent and the team have talked, and Lyle said he would like to sign with the Jets. Groh was noncommittal about PK John Hall's future. Hall is under contract, but it seems most unlikely that he will be back after being replaced by Brett Conway for the final game. The Jets will have the 19th selection in the first round of the April NFL draft.

The New York Post reports New York Jets K Brett Conway participated in his first Jet practice Wednesday. However, coach Al Groh is still undecided to who'll kick for the Jets Sunday. Groh should announce his decision by Friday at the latest. Newsday reports the Jets are going into Sunday with no players listed as worse than probable for the game, including DL Ernie Logan (sprained knee) and FB Richie Anderson (mild concussion). Both are expected to be fine.

The Times-Picayune reports despite Doug Brien's 3-for-3 performance on field goals Sunday, the Saints worked out three kickers Monday, Jeff Hall, Chris Boniol and Brett Conway.
