Packers | Still Looking for the Right Holder

Thu, 02 Jun 2005 19:19:09 -0700

Lori Nickel, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports a glaring area of need for the Green Bay Packers is finding a holder for PK Ryan Longwell. "That holding job is still up in the air," special teams coach John Bonamego admitted. "That's still a big question mark right now. We'll get that figured out." On the second day of minicamp, Thursday June 2, QBs Aaron Rodgers and Craig Nall took equal turns at holding for Longwell, and the results were pretty bad. A third of the 35-yard attempts either missed to the left or were borderline to the left. One missed with Nall and two with Rodgers. "I'm OK joking about it the first minicamp. But this second minicamp, it's serious now. It's got to be a front-burner issue. It's instrumental," said Longwell. The Packers don't want to re-sign the holder Longwell likes, free agent P Bryan Barker.

Redskins | Team Notes

Thu, 12 Apr 2001 20:59:03 -0700

The Washington Post reports Washington Redskins coach Marty Schottenheimer reiterated again the Redskins would like to trade down from the 15th pick in the NFL draft to add more selections later in the draft. He knows doing so will be tough. "Everybody wants to trade down," Schottenheimer said. "Maybe the thing to do is go against the tide and try to trade up." The coach played down the chances the Redskins would use their first round draft choice on Michigan G Steve Hutchinson, even if he was there at No. 15. He didn't rule out the Redskins selecting a cornerback, linebacker or defensive tackle. The coach hinted he would probably not pass on WR Koren Robinson of North Carolina State, if he was available. P Bryan Barker, signed earlier today, will replace P Tommy Barnhardt.

The Redskins are only about $120,000 under the cap and coach Marty Schottenheimer said it remains "a long shot" that the team will be able to re-sign both players. Agents for both players appear to be willing to commit their clients to veteran minimum salaries. The coach also said the Redskins are talking to MLB Derek Smith, but no resolution is imminent. Also, the coach acknowledged an interest in free agent P Bryan Barker. The team is also not going to jump into the QB market at this point even though Steve Beuerlein and Damon Huard became available today. The team will add a third QB, the only question is when.

The Times Union reports with free agent P Bryan Barker looking to sign elsewhere, the Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to visit with P Todd Sauerbrun who was just released by the Chiefs. "We haven't worked out the details yet, but they're definitely interested," Sauerbrun's agent, Steve Weiberg, said Friday. Barker said the Jaguars have yet to contact him about re-signing. Sauerbrun and Barker reportedly would cost the Jaguars about the same price, so it is being perceived as a "strange" move by Barker's teammate, PK Mike Hollis. The Jaguars have worked out several rookie free-agent punters and talked to several at the recent NFL Combine. Barker said yesterday he is having serious talks with another team he declined to identify, but from earlier reports that team appears to be Washington.
