Athletics | Dan Straily optioned, Ryan Cook to DL

Fri, 09 May 2014 13:53:56 -0700

The Oakland Athletics have optioned SP Dan Straily to Class AAA Sacramento and placed RP Ryan Cook (forearm) on the 15-day disabled list. Oakland also called up RPs Fernando Rodriguez and Joe Savery.

Fantasy Tip: They'll have Straily work on a few things; he's worth holding in some deep games because of his talent, but he could be more hurtful dead weight in mixed leagues. Expect Drew Pomeranz to take over his spot in the rotation; he's a pickup everywhere outside of extremely shallow formats; he's shown signs of reviving his prospect hype and finally resides in an organization that'll help him succeed.

Oakland Athletics RP Fernando Rodriguez (elbow) faced hitters Tuesday, Feb. 25, for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last March. He was surprised by the results. "Not what I expected it to be, I guess, because I had such an adrenaline rush, so the ball was flying out of my hand," Rodriguez said. "It's kind of exciting. It's something I've been waiting for a while. I couldn't have asked for a better day for it being the first time throwing off the mounds to hitters."

Athletics | Encouraged by Fernando Rodriguez's progress

Sat, 22 Feb 2014 20:22:15 -0800

Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Saturday, Feb. 22, that he is extremely encouraged by the recovery progress of RP Fernando Rodriguez (elbow) from Tommy John surgery. He is nearly a year removed from the operation. While he is not expected to work in Cactus League spring games, he's already looking "like he could pitch in a game right now," according to Melvin. He is out of options, but likely to start the season on the 15-day disabled list so the team can get him a handful of minor-league rehab appearances with Triple-A Sacramento.
