Oakland Athletics RP Fernando Rodriguez (elbow) faced hitters Tuesday, Feb. 25, for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last March. He was surprised by the results. "Not what I expected it to be, I guess, because I had such an adrenaline rush, so the ball was flying out of my hand," Rodriguez said. "It's kind of exciting. It's something I've been waiting for a while. I couldn't have asked for a better day for it being the first time throwing off the mounds to hitters."

He is nearly a year removed from the operation. While he is not expected to work in Cactus League spring games, he's already looking "like he could pitch in a game right now," according to Melvin. He is out of options, but likely to start the season on the 15-day disabled list so the team can get him a handful of minor-league rehab appearances with Triple-A Sacramento.
