St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras is starting in center field Wednesday, July 9, against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Fantasy Tip: This is what fantasy owners are hoping happens more frequently going forward. Allen Craig, Matt Adams, Matt Holliday and Taveras are all in the lineup. Manager Mike Matheny said he would give Taveras time in center field depending on the stadium. Today's start comes at home, so Taveras could begin getting additional starts in center field if he plays well defensively. NL-only owners will want to monitor this situation closely, as Jon Jay and Peter Bourjos could lose even more playing time.

St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras is starting in center field Wednesday, July 2.
Fantasy Tip: Taveras is expected to mainly play the corner outfield spots, but St. Louis would like to challenge him in center, too, since it'll give them more lineup flexibility. If Taveras proves he can be effective in center, it means less playing time for Peter Bourjos.

St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras, who will likely be used mostly in left and right field, could also end up in center field. He says he's comfortable playing all three outfield positions, which could mean OF Peter Bourjos loses some playing time. Taveras is prepared to stick around this time after hitting .189 after his initial call-up.
Fantasy Tip: Mike Matheny acknowledged that there is no set plan to get Taveras playing time, and he'll have to mix and match when players need rest. Bourjos and Matt Adams could be the ones affected the most when Taveras plays, though.

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jon Jay is hitting .405 (15-for-37) in his last 12 games.
Fantasy Tip: Jay should see the lion's share of starts in center field over Peter Bourjos for now.

The St. Louis Cardinals are currently determining how to find big-league playing time for top OF prospect Oscar Taveras, but general manager John Mozeliak said it will likely come at the expense of someone else. "I actually think from a baseball standpoint he could play in the big leagues," Mozeliak said. "But we've got to determine playing time up here with the current roster. Are we at a point where we're willing to take away at-bats from the current roster and give them to somebody else?" If Taveras is called up it could be at the expense of OFs Allen Craig, Jon Jay, Peter Bourjos and Matt Adams.

St. Louis Cardinals OF Peter Bourjos (forearm) took a knee to his right forearm trying to break up a double play in the Saturday, May 10, game and was sore the following day. Manager Mike Matheny started OF Jon Jay in center during the Sunday, May 11, night game. Also, twice in the series, Bourjos banged off the wall in center making catches.

The St. Louis Cardinals recalled 1B/OF Joey Butler from Triple-A Memphis and optioned OF Randal Grichuk to Memphis.
Fantasy Tip: Butler was hitting .360 with four homers and 20 RBIs at Triple-A. He's a late bloomer at 28 and is worth picking up in NL-only leagues. However, he might not garner enough playing time to be more than a depth pickup. The move suggests Peter Bourjos will start seeing more playing time.

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said to expect a more regular dose of OF Peter Bourjos in the lineup after the outfielder had five hits in two starts against the Atlanta Braves this week, including his first home run since June of last year.
Fantasy Tip: Matheny had been trying to find the right time to get Bourjos regular at-bats and get him going. It appears now is that time. A platoon split in center field with Jon Jay is still likely, though, which means Randal Grichuk might be out of luck.

Fantasy Tip: He's 5-for-9 this week and starting to show signs of life at the plate.
