The Sports Xchange reports Washington Redskins backup LB/special teams ace Eddie Mason (shoulder) recently underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair one of his shoulders. There is still a chance the Redskins will re-sign him for the 2003 season. He is about to become an unrestricted free agent.

The Washington Post reports Washington Redskins LB LaVar Arrington (knee) and RG Ben Coleman (knee) will both be game-time decisions Sunday night. Arrington did a bit of work during today's practice, but Coleman remained sidelined, according to coach Marty Schottenheimer. Matt Campbell would replace Coleman and Eddie Mason would start at linebacker if Arrington is sidelined.

The Washington Post reports Washington Redskins starting LT Chris Samuels and reserve LB Eddie Mason were sick earlier today and both missed practice. The team expects both to play Sunday. Coach Marty Schottenheimer made it sound like TE Stephen Alexander (ankle) will not play Sunday. "I just don't think he's ready," Schottenheimer said. "He's just not fluid and natural. It's been a while since he's done a lot. I think that contributes to it."

The Baltimore Sun reports the Baltimore Ravens worked out seven linebackers on Thursday in an effort to replace the released Cornell Brown. The most notable names: Eddie Mason, a surprise cut by the Redskins; Ryan Phillips, cut by the Raiders; Jeff Posey, let go by Eagles; and Dwayne Gordon, who was cut by the Jets. The Ravens apparently won't sign any of these players until Monday at the earliest when they will not be locked into their salary for the whole year.

The Washington Post reports with Washington Redskins free agent MLB Derek Smith inching closer to a contract with the 49ers, the team will intensify efforts to re-sign free agent LB Kevin Mitchell. Agent Gary Wichard said he hoped to complete a deal soon and that one of the holdups was Mitchell and his agent were waiting to see what happened with Smith. The Redskins could also select a linebacker in next month's NFL draft. Coach Marty Schottenheimer said OLB Eddie Mason will be given a look at middle linebacker in the team's upcoming mini-camp.
