Fri, 18 May 2012 19:48:12 -0700 Updating a previous report, St. Louis Cardinals RP Kyle McClellan (elbow) was diagnosed with a strained flexor pronator and small tear of his ulnar collateral ligament after an examination Friday, May 18. The tear is small enough that it is believed surgery is not a necessity.

McClellan could return in late August or early September. OF Allen Craig (hamstring) is believed to only need the minimum 15 days on the disabled list.

McClellan, who had Tommy John surgery in 2006, fears he may have ruptured the elbow ligament again. McClellan said the sensation this time was not as acute as what he experienced prior to his surgery, but he also acknowledged persistent discomfort and swelling of the elbow during the past two weeks.

Manager Mike Matheny is approaching Boggs with a "blank slate" approach with RP Jason Motte entrenched as the closer. RP Fernando Salas is most likely to serve as the eighth-inning setup man over RP Eduardo Sanchez. RP Kyle McClellan is another setup option, but he could be used as trade bait in spring training. RPs Scott Linebrink and Marc Rzepczynski are other candidates for setup work, but Matheny isn't making any assumptions.

Ps Lance Lynn, Kyle McClellan and Mitchell Boggs will prepare solely as relievers. SP Brandon Dickson is an option to be a swingman if needed.
