Vinny DiTrani, of the Bergen Record, reports the New York Giants have hired former LB Jessie Armstead as a special assistant/consultant. He will primarily work on special projects for the coaching staff. He will also assist director of player development Charles Way and will help recruit free agents.

Brett Borden, of Panthers.com, reports Carolina Panthers LB Jessie Armstead signed with the Panthers as a free agent because he wanted to be reunited with head coach John Fox, who coached Armstead as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants from 1997-2001. "We stayed in touch, and when the opportunity came, I wasn't going to pass it up to play for him," Armstead said. "I'm just glad to be a part of this and am going to try to take us to the next step. It doesn't do you any good to go to the Super Bowl if you don't bring home that trophy. I've been there with Coach Fox. We need to bring it home this time."

"A healthy Mark Fields is our starter on the strong side," Fox said. There was speculation that the additions of LB Brandon Short and LB Jessie Armstead would shake up the starting linebacker group. Fields is still on the road to recovery from Hodgkin's disease.

"It's getting to a point where we're all going to have to get together because it's hard enough beating teams in this league [without] beating yourself also," Armstead said. "That's probably the hardest thing in this league, not beating yourself."

The injury to Armstead, who said he would have returned to the game if it had went into overtime, will probably garner some attention this week.

Updating an earlier story, the Washington Post reports free agent LB Jeremiah Trotter (Eagles) was at Redskins Park Monday, along with his agent Jimmy Sexton. Trotter met today with Redskins defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis. "It's definitely a good opportunity, and I'm excited about it," Trotter said today. "I hope we can get something done." Trotter and Sexton left town without a contract. The Houston Texans and Green Bay Packers also are pursuing Trotter. The Redskins would like to sign Trotter and play him between OLBs LaVar Arrington and Jessie Armstead.

Jason Gould reports for Redskins.com LB Kevin Mitchell continues to rehab his injured right ankle. He suffered a high ankle sprain near the end of the 2001 season. He's able to run, but he hasn't tried any side-to-side movement or planting, keys at the linebacker position. "I'm looking forward to going out and participating," Mitchell said of the team's upcoming mini-camp. "I really don't know how it's actually going to feel until I get out there." Mitchell is looking forward to playing MLB between LaVar Arrington and newly signed LB Jessie Armstead.

According to the Washington Post, the free agent tour of LB Shawn Barber (Redskins) is starting. As noted earlier, he'll meet with the New York Jets Wednesday and the Giants in the coming days. Agent Brian Mackler said he is speaking to nine teams about the unrestricted free agent. The Redskins are continuing their efforts to re-sign Barber even after adding LB Jessie Armstead, and Barber said this week the Redskins remain in the mix.

Redskins.com reports the Washington Redskins have officially signed free agent OLB Jessie Armstead (Giants). ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reported on March 1 the deal is a three-year, $4.5 million contract that includes a signing bonus of $1.25 million and base salaries of $750,000 (2002), $1 million (2003) and $1.5 million (2004).

"I spoke to (owner) Mr. (Daniel) Snyder, and Marvin Lewis called. They really showed that they wanted me," Armstead said. Armstead also said out of respect to coach John Fox, he first tried to work out a deal with Carolina, but it could not be worked out because of salary cap reasons.

Steve Reed reports for the Gaston Gazette, in addition to the previously reported LB Jessie Armstead, the Carolina Panthers are also apparently interested in free agent RB Joe Montgomery, formerly of the New York Giants. Team officials wouldn’t comment on Armstead since he has not officially been released by the Giants.

Updating an ongoing storyline, Jay Glazer reports for SportsLine.com New York Giants LB Jessie Armstead confirmed to Glazer he will be released by the team Thursday. Armstead said he was informed by Giants coach Jim Fassel that he will be released, allowing him to enter the free agent market immediately. "I'm not bitter at all about this because I'm a realist," said Armstead from his home in Dallas. "I'm not done by far playing, but I know what happens from the business end of football. I'm going to look at the other options, but I would like to make a decision and sign somewhere else as soon as possible." Armstead says he would love to re-unite with his former defensive coordinator John Fox in Carolina.

The New York Daily News, as an update to earlier stories, reports the New York Giants have basically ruled out re-signing LB Jessie Armstead when they release him, which is expected to happen soon. The team will only save $1 million under the cap by cutting him and they could have saved a lot more money had they just restructured his contract.

The New York Post reports New York Giants OLB Jessie Armstead could hit the open market as early as Wednesday. He counts $4.2 million against the salary cap this year and the Giants believe his skills are in decline. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said they'll talk to other teams and stay in touch with the Giants. Rosenhaus said the team is heading in the direction to release Armstead.

Neil Best reports for NY Newsday the New York Giants plan to release LB Jessie Armstead next week. Cutting Armstead next week instead of in June would limit the cap savings to $1 million or so, but the Giants apparently do not want to leave him in limbo for three months. Other veterans who are likely to be released include OT Lomas Brown, S Sam Garnes, QB Jason Garrett and TE Howard Cross, but those four could return later for the minimum salary.

In the next week, they're expected to begin purging their roster to open up additional room. OG Glenn Parker and CB Dave Thomas could be cut and LB Jessie Armstead and S Sam Garnes may be forced to restructure their contracts or be released.

Giants | Scary Trip to Pro Bowl for Two Players

Jay Glazer reports for SportsLine.com that New York Giants DE Michael Strahan and LB Jessie Armstead were given quite a scare on Monday during their trip from Dallas to Honolulu for the Pro Bowl. While in transit, the pilot said they'd have to turn around and land in Los Angeles because of mechanical problems. While the pilot said mechanical problems, the truth was a package was found on board. Once at the Los Angeles airport, police and fire trucks arrived. The package had a white powder in it so the passengers were forced to remain on the plane until the package was deemed safe. Luckily it was just a false alarm and everyone was safe.

The New York Daily News is reporting the New York Giants have left LB Jessie Armstead and DE Kenny Holmes unprotected for the NFL expansion draft. An earlier report had DE Frank Ferrara and LB Clayton White as the last two names on the Giants list. The Giants were tight-lipped on the subject until they contacted all the players involved.

Bill Pennington reports for the New York Times the New York Giants will soon turn their attention to their future. In the next four months, it is likely that the Giants, through free agency and the NFL draft, will be looking for three starting offensive linemen, a safety, a third wide receiver, a fullback, a tight end, someone to return kickoffs and possibly a replacement for LB Jessie Armstead. The team will look to work out new contracts for S Shaun Williams and QB Kerry Collins. They may or may not attempt to re-sign free agent FB Greg Comella and WR Joe Jurevicius. Armstead is to receive $4.2 million next season, but reportedly the Giants have no intention of giving it to him.

The New York Post reports New York Giants LB Jessie Armstead's has dropped 10 pounds in the past few weeks to get down to 230 pounds, which is not far off his rookie weight. Head coach Jim Fassel came up with the idea for Armstead to shed some pounds to increase his speed.

The Star Ledger reports New York Giants LB Jessie Armstead (calf/hamstring) will likely continue to play through the calf and hamstring strains on his left leg. Armstead played only on first and second downs and finished with three tackles against Dallas. Backup Dhani Jones replaced him on third downs. Head coach Jim Fassel decided to let Armstead play only after he was assured by the medical staff that Armstead wasn't in danger of further hurting himself by playing.

Despite the fact he has never missed a game in his nine-year career, team officials expressed some doubts that he could recover sufficiently to play against Dallas. His preliminary diagnosis is a strained a left knee ligament.

Fassel has wasted little time trying to pound out of his players' heads the feeling that the Redskins are as bad as they appear. "A trap game," Fassel called it. It's a huge game for the Giants because of the state of the NFC East and because they have games against the Rams and Eagles the next two weeks. "We can't look at any game like it's going to be a win," said LB Jessie Armstead.

The Associated Press reports despite concerns by LB Jessie Armstead about being a salary cap victim down the road, the New York Giants said again they will not renegotiate his contract. "We are not changing our position," GM Ernie Accorsi said Thursday. "Our position hasn't changed and won't change. I have a salary cap to manage and a salary structure to maintain," the GM added.
