Updating an ongoing story, Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips (kidney) will undergo surgery this week to address a kidney problem. He is expected to miss a week to 10 days, but he said the issue is not life threatening. Linebackers coach Reggie Herring will run the defense in Phillips' absence.

Dallas Cowboys linebackers coach Reggie Herring told a Houston television station Wednesday, Jan. 19, that he could remain with the club rather than join the Houston Texans coaching staff, according to Gerry Fraley, of The Dallas Morning News. "Just here to feel things out and see what direction we are going to go," Herring said before going to a job interview with Texans head coach Gary Kubiak. "The options I have are to stay in Dallas or come to Houston. I'm very comfortable with both."
