He has a 12-point lead of Penske Championship driver Brad Keselowski, who was the 2012 Sprint Cup Series champion.

Hendrick Motorsports driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. is entering the 2013 Sprint Cup season with 13 unsponsored races, but owner Rick Hendrick is confident the No. 88 team will find sponsors that are willing to work with Earnhardt past the 2013 season. The team has been close on two or three deals, but no agreements have been reached.

JR Motorsports announced Thursday, Jan. 3, that drivers Kasey Kahne and Brad Sweet will split duties in a second full-time Nationwide Series car in 2013. Great Clips will sponsor the ride for 28 races, including 27 among Kahne and Sweet and one for driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. Driver Regan Smith will move to the No. 7 car and Earnhardt will drive the No. 88 car in a select number of events.

Hendrick Motorsports announced Tuesday, Oct. 23, that driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. (concussion) will return to Sprint Cup racing this weekend at Martinsville Speedway after being medically cleared. "Dale Jr. has done everything asked of him," neurosurgeon Dr. Jerry Petty said. "He hasn't had a headache since Oct. 12, and we have not been able to provoke any symptoms since that time. I have informed NASCAR and Hendrick Motorsports that he is medically cleared for all NASCAR-related activity."

Hendrick Motorsports driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. (concussion) is expected to return to the Sprint Cup Series next weekend at Martinsville Speedway, however, owner Rick Hendrick retracted his statements saying that Earnhardt was cleared to race. "I didn't read my emails this morning," Hendrick said. "I spoke too soon. I do apologize. I've been scolded severely. I promise I will keep my mouth shut." Earnhardt will take part in a closed test at a half-mile oval in Georgia Monday, Oct. 22, and he'll be evaluated Tuesday, Oct. 23.

He will miss his second straight Cup race at Kansas Speedway Sunday, Oct. 21, because of two concussions in a six-week time frame. Earnhardt is on schedule to test his car early next week.

Hendrick Motorsports driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. (concussion) will miss the next two Sprint Cup races with a concussion, which will end his championship chances in 2012. Driver Regan Smith will replace Earnhardt in the No. 88 Chevrolet at Charlotte and Kansas. Earnhardt was injured in the 25-car accident at Talladega Superspeedway last weekend. He'll end his streak of 461 consecutive Cup starts, which is the fifth longest active streak.
